me and my indie rocker musician friends only started to get into electronic music _at all_ when aphex twin, squarepusher, dj shadow, orbital, autechre, boards of canada etc... came out... Before that the only decent electronic music, in our opinions, was stuff like kraftwerk etc... Basically, IDM or whatever you want to call it was the first music of the electronic sort that wasn't repetitively boring and retarded... You could tell in listening to it that the artists were truly artists, and had labored with genius level of originality over each and every sound in the music. ALso, you could tell that they tried to infuse their emotions into the music as well. Lately, on both of these fronts, electronic artists have not been up to the task so it seems, and are back to their old standby of drug-induced knob twisting wankery... Oh well... I will wait until the next amazing album comes out of whatever genre it comes from and listen to it as always... peace out... P.S. the name "IDM" sucks really bad and I refrain from using it around my friends... We say "experimental electronic". --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yea... we've all experienced at least a dozen threads about how much the acronym IDM sucks, but I think using the word "experimental" in any way to describe a genre is equally sucky. It seems to insinuate that the process this music was created in was somehow haphazard and aimless. Like these musicians just screwed around without a concept in mind. I dunno. -Aaron

Scientific experiments are usually very controlled, with a specific concept (a hypothesis) very much in mind. I don't know where your concept of "experimental" came from, but that's what I've always thought of when I heard the word. -adam _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? In reference to music, most people who write "experimental" music, don't have a hypothesis, nor are they controlled. There are actully very few people who actually have a destination they would like to hit when they "experiment" with music. I believe that is what Aaron was getting at. on 5/8/01 4:16 PM, Adam Piontek at apiontek@yahoo.com wrote:
