Wells is right. It pains me to say so, Wells being Wells, but he's right. Gospel sometimes makes for good samples - DJ Shadow for instance makes good use of it sometimes. So does James Brown, even though his own stuff is deadly boring. *ducks* -- Peter Hollo raven@fourplay.com.au http://www.fourplay.com.au/me.html FourPlay - Eclectic Electric String Quartet http://www.fourplay.com.au Raven: experimental electronic http://www.fourplay.com.au/sound.html "Of course, dance music can be a music where you lie on your back and your brain cells dance" -Michael Karoli of Can, quoted in Wire mag. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

OK so I'd better admit that actually it's not that it's BAD, it's just that I don't like it. And I've heard plenty, so I'm not just closed-minded (can't speak for Wells here). Kent also says:
quoted 2 lines If it's religion that gets your knickers in a twist, well you're going to have> If it's religion that gets your knickers in a twist, well you're going to have > your knickers twisted a lot of the time, since religion isn't going to go away.
Well that's a shame. The freethinking individuals amongst us will just have to keep thinking then won't we! Damn. Peter. ObIDM: I haven't noticed Rough Trade mentioned amongst the IDM-friendly shops in London. Whilst Berwick St Soho is indeed heaven, Rough Trade (two stores that I know of) have a great selection of idm and experimental stuff, including the Mego type things which were quite hard to find in London otherwise, I found. And everyone in Australia should make themselves aware of Synaesthesia, importer of fine experimental music. -- Peter Hollo raven@fourplay.com.au http://www.fourplay.com.au/me.html FourPlay - Eclectic Electric String Quartet http://www.fourplay.com.au Raven: experimental electronic http://www.fourplay.com.au/sound.html "Of course, dance music can be a music where you lie on your back and your brain cells dance" -Michael Karoli of Can, quoted in Wire mag. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Nah, you're wrong! And I'm right! Bwahahahaha... Actually, I'm perfectly happy for people to like James Brown, gospel music, Bob Marley, most opera, house (four-on-the-floor) whatever else, and call it good music. I just don't like them mostly. Yeah ok some bits of James Brown are obviously fantastic. I just find he goes on too much, too long, too repetitively, and it becomes abrasive. [NO discussions of repetitiveness in music will be entered into - one thread we don't need to philosophise about AGAIN. *grin*] I don't find I want to listen to any James Brown song in its entirety. I'd rather listen to DJ Food or whomever sampling JB. I like the sound of samples manipulated in interesting ways, I like the different sounds that get layered on top of the rhythm samples, I like the bigger and rounder bass sound in some of that instrumental hip hop and in drum'n'bass... No ducking this time. Sounds like 95% of the music we discuss on this list. :) Greg obIDM: This morning for my commute listening, I pulled out a MiniDisc of Adrien75 MP3s I snagged from MP3.com a couple of months back, and I must once again rave about how great this guy's stuff is. No, not unfounded at all! I've heard lots of James Brown, and called it the way I hear it. I get bored. I didn't criticise his skill at songwriting, the musicianship of his bands, his supreme funkiness, or anything else.

Well, I play in a moderately popular band in Australia. We've sold 6,000 copies of our one album as yet. Not really in competition with JB! But honestly, do I have to be as iconoclastic a musician as X before I can say I don't like them, or even actually criticise them? Here: I'm a classically trained cellist. I hereby declare that I find a large amount of Mozart very boring (and some - the Requiem, the clarinet quintet, some other bits - sublime). Am I out of line because I'm not a household name like Wolfy is?

I'm also a cellist. And I agree. Talk about 'rest-proof-clockwork' -- playing Mozart symphonies in an orchestra made me feel like a gear inside a big machine. Maybe I played under the wrong conductors or something, but playing Mozart has all the precision and emotional resonance of running an air wrench on an assembly line. And now for something completely different -- the new Icarus (on shadow records in the US, Recordings of Substance UK) kicks major ass. It's the Photek album Photek would make if he wasn't tearing around the English countryside spending Sony's money... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Sadly this is the case. We are not by any means an awful smooth jazz group! We weren't aware of the American band when we started. And I have no lack of respect for James Brown, I just get sick of the sound fairly quickly when listening to him. As Kelley has pointed out to me off-list, this is not really an on-topic discussion, but I had to defend my band *grin* Similarly with Mozart, all I wanted to say was that surely it's alright for me not to particularly like a fair amount of his stuff even though I'm not quite up to his (undoutable) standards of composition/musicianship. By the way, the Dr Smith & Professor Ludlow 12" "Rinsin With the Doctor" on Fat Cat is superb. Was it no more than a vicious rumour that this is Andy Weatherall or Two Lone Swordsmen? It _could_ be from the sound, but I'm not altogether convinced...
