Good news for those lamenting the moribund state of drum & bass: Sm:)e is reissuing Klute's Casual Bodies in the US with a 4-track bonus EP, incl. Photek's remix of "Silent Weapons" and Dom & Roland's remix of "Perception." This is dark, rhythmically complex jungle that should appeal to those into Virus, No U-Turn, Certificate 18 and Metalheadz stuff. Anyone who samples 23 Skidoo's "Kundalini" and Miles Davis' "Black Satin"--as Klute (aka Tom Withers) does here-- is okay by me (as long as he gets permission, right? ; ) ). huh? how was this album rhythmically complex? the few times i listened to it, i was under the impression that the same exact breakbeat was being used throughout, at around the same tempo. as for it being dark, i suppose that's open for interpretation, but the appellation baffles me a bit. is 'dark' what they call melody-less, minimal drum n bass? then again, i'm pretty ignorant of drum n bass, so i'm probably just making a fool of myself here. i just wonder where the complexity is in these beats & why i missed it. anybody notice i talk too much? -- david

I was a bit bored with the Klute EP, Total Self, until I played it recently on my new Cerwin Vega 500 watt studio monitors..... and for the first time I actually heard all of the deeeep sub-bass programming on many of the tracks (Hang-Up and Tribunal especially). You might try turning the volume up a bit or something... :) Been revisiting a lot of old records lately just to hear what I was missing all these years.... Incunabula is vastly superior on heavy artillery, as is old Tetsu Inoue records and Black Dog records..... mmm..... Colongib was over hear last night, and we were listening to the CiM Service Pack EP until I got a complaint from the a neighbor on the other side of the building.... Tee hee..... Hang Up is the one!!! This is the speaker-testing-device I often use to "impress friends" :-) You imperatively must have subwoofers, all of you... there's just so much information on much of the music we discuss here, that gets 'lost' on ordinary hi-fi playback. Sorry I'm preaching. It's just such an epiphany. Especially things like Thomas Koner's Kaamos, Emmanuel Top's Asteroid, etc. etc - these works totally come to life with the deepest rumbling visceral whole-body reactions. Aaaaaah.

Ha ha... yes, we got that from playing Luke Slater on LOW volume. The bass sine wave travels through walls and foundations. Over and out. I * ~ you can also mail me at <lime909@hotmail.com>

The Klute album is really cool! When I was over at a friend's house I saw he had a cdr of a Dj Teebee remix of Faceless. Perhaps there will be another single out soon. --- Dave Segal <segal@altpress.com> wrote:

I've been wanted to chime in on this one. I have a record on Leaf by Klute, it this what you guys are talking about? I love the 12"! I play it at 33, which i think is wrong but it comes out this warped harsh dark evil breaks track , with a vocal sample that sounds like 'i am satisfied' I opened a set with this track and people just gave me the strangest looks. I don't think ever before had the raverkids heard such and evil-sounding track. oh what fun to be a dj. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Way to merge the "sub-bass" and "wrong speed" threads! 5 extra points! I play a number of tracks at the "wrong speed". My favorites are Photek's mix of Roni Size's "Brown Paper Bag" and Wax Doctor's 12" on R&S. They both turn from decent DnB (45PRM) to excellent techno-jazz pieces (33RPM). Mixing the Photek remix into some Chain Reaction material is sublime. I'm constantly on the hunt for jazzy techno-speed breaks material like this - "Manufactured Memories" and "Bug in the Bassbin" by Innerzone Orchestra are my measuring sticks for this sort of style, but I have lots of other records I enjoy in this vein. Anybody have suggestions for more mixable techno-speed stuff like this? I need jazzy, well-programmed breaks, funky but not silly (ala Big Beat stuff). I haven't listened to this stuff in a while, but some great (relatively "older") mixable dnb records that come to mind: Wafta.College Street Zoo 12" (Spymania) PFM.The Western Tune 12" (Good Looking) Kid Loops.Alien Resident 12" (Filter) Kid Loops.Back to the Lab 12" (Filter) I could imagine any of these would sound great next to a Basic Channel/Chain Reaction. OTOH, I've always enjoyed a more messed up sounding mix, out of kilter, etc. -eric. -np-L'Usine (iSOphlux) (nice for now!)

From the listens I gave it, on recommendation from various people, it's not rhythmically complex in the least. Just the same old boring two step rubbish. Dom & Roland's album "Industry" has quite a bit of two step in it but manages to be a lot more rhythmically complex, as well as having some very evocative melodic bits at times. And Arcon 2's album is the darkest and most intricately programmed "mainstream" drum'n'bass album I've heard in recent years.

Unfortunately yes. One can sortof see why when it's played VERY LOUD at a club, but compared to say the stuff mentioned above, or indeed to what one might expect or hope to hear, most of it's very very lame indeed. My opinion. Nice, I can imagine it already.
quoted 1 line are there any others you use?> are there any others you use?
"the hidden camera" (I *think*, I can never remember exactly which track it is) by Photek. It's the midtempo (130BPM?) cut on "the hidden camera EP" (Science/Astralwerks) "sunday shining (Gerald's Sony Walkman mix)" by Finley Quaye, remix by A Guy Called Gerald. More midtempo breaks, with a great aquatic effect on Finley Quaye's voice. I found my copy for $1, which made it all the sweeter. "bug in the bassbin", "manufactured memories", "at les" (all by Innerzone Orchestra). I don't remember the track name, but there's a great jazzy breaks track on the 4th "From Beyond" record, on Interdimensional Transmissions, by Shake (Anthony Shakir). I've also been mixing some of the Timbaland-esque hip-hop into more minimal stuff. A few of those favorites: Timbaland & Magoo - "Up jumps da boogie" (classic!) Outkast - "Spottieottiedopilicious". From their last album "Aquemini", sounds great when you play the instrumental slowed down (to around 65BPM, probably) and mix it with bumping minimal techno ("No Stunts" by Pelon on Chain Reaction is a favorite). The horns in "Spottie..." are the absolute shit, they sound like what a marching band would be if it were funky as hell. Anyway, hope this provides some inspiration.
