No, Zenon's right. No recording of Beaumont Hannant is available domestically except his work with Lida Husik and some of his remixes. I had to spend something like $25 for Texturology and $30 for Sculptured (albeit at expensivo-Tower records). Of course, it was nice to get the Texturology ltd. LP for $15 at a local record shop, still sealed! It's only good record stores that stock Hannant solo imports. Put this on your list of judging criteria. : 7 I want to publicly thank Zenon for his constantly entertaining posts. They are so fun to read! Andrew

Andrew, you beat me - I was about to say this myself! I'm not much of an ambient listener, but I'm on the ambient list solely to read more of his "ambientological" posts. ;) Zenon - you got yourself a fan club! Keep it up!! Satoko <Zero length text item>

since GPR has dissolved? I didn't know that GPR had dissolved. Last I heard they were in the middle of a big move. What happened? As far as BH turning up on a new label, keep an eye out for his stuff on One Little Indian. He has done more than a few remixes for them with Bjork and has released two singles and a full length as Outcast (his project with Richard Brown). Still impatiently waiting for Notions of Tonality v.2 ARM/Ren np-Glenn Miller

How is the Outcast album anyway? Aren't Hannant & Brown responsible for the electronics on Lida Husik's last album? The marriage of vocal pop & 90's idm-style on _Green Blue Fire_ was much more successful than I expected it to be. Miles

Yes: Outcast: Terrible (117TP12) UK" 12 with three tracks, LP vers, instrumental, and non-LP instrumental track (no singing) Outcast: Rollercoaster (107TP7CD) UK CD5 with 6 remixes, also 12" with the same mixes Outcast: Out of Tune (TPLP74CD) UK CD with 9 tracks. Also watch for the new TEEX comp, which has a track by Outcast. for any other Hannant/related information, see http://www.monkey.org/~laps/music/hannant.html which is high on info, low on pictures (which will change), and is almost completely up-to-date.
quoted 1 line How is the Outcast album anyway?>How is the Outcast album anyway?
Excellent, but it takes a few listenings to find out that you really love it. It's different than anything you've heard by Hannant, and different than anything _I've_ heard from Richard Brown (which I admit isn't much). It has four guest artists, two of which help write (lyrics only, I assume), one who raps over two of the songs, and a bass player whom I've never heard of (Spad). Only one track is without vocals. If you think that will detract from your enjoyment of the album, however, I suggest you give it a try, because the singing is infectious, sexy, and unobtrusive like some diva-driven-techno can be. The music is great. And the grooves are the ingenious, textured type you'd expect from Hannant and Brown, sometimes echoey and distant, other times a total audio onslaught.

more successful than I expected it to be. Same here, and I think a lot of people who have heard the album agree. Green Blue Fire (and Husik in general), however, has a much more folky-pop sound, as opposed to Out of Tune, which is much more IDM-based. I think Out of Tune is even more IDM based than Hannant's Sculptured LP, and instantly more accessible. ENJOY! ARM/Ren np: Outcast "Choice"

Try: http://www.monkey.org/~laps/music/hannant.html My recommendations are the alternate Texturology 12", the Psi-Onyx CDS, the Notions of Tonality 1 CDS, and of course, the Bjork Hyperballad Over The Edge Mix. BTW, if anyone has the alternate version of Texturology (no, not the blue one), I'll give ya $25 for it, or trade a CD of mu-Ziq's PHI*1700[U/V]. While I'm at it, how about a CD of Analogue Bubblebath III for Tastes&Textures 1 & 3? Che

Oh yes, Beaumont did release two versions of Texturology. One being limited.Vinyl only. Totally different tracks than the other. However, at this point I'm pretty sure it's long gone. Both came out on GPR (who seemed to disappear for a while, then put out Pil or something like that, and disappeard again.) I find these both excellent showcases of what this man can do. He and Richard Brown that is. (AWSOME producer/artist/technician.) Most of Beaumont's material is timeless.Still blowing away 90% of what I hear coming out today. He's highly underrated in the world of IDM. At least with the people buying it anyway. I'm just glad to see someone actually mentioning him. Most of his releases are limited in quantity. Earlier works are next to impossible to come across these days. Unless you find someone willing to give up there copy(ies).Maybe try writing GPR and DEMAND some copies for yourself. Or write Beaumont personally. I hear he's one of the nicest people in electronica to deal with. I assume you have Notions of Tonality 1&2? If not I can supply you with them. Not his best works, but nonetheless, quality electronica. Look for the Full-legnth album out sometime in the near future. Good Luck. Ben Synaptic Records (Rick and Ben) 608 S. how would you (IDM world) rate "tastes and textures vol 1" vs. "t&t vol 2" and "texturology" (non-limited version)?? (two of my ALL-TIME favorite electronic albums)
quoted 3 lines i also give him a lot of credit for experimenting with styles> i also give him a lot of credit for experimenting with styles > and sounds that were not easily accepted by people. i think he has > suffered for his experimental approach.
i, myself, think that hannant/brown collaboration in general has been astoundingly fresh and innovative, yet quite accessible. but i guess it remains a mystery (to me) as to how much mr. brown influences the sound of the hannant output. it seems that 'Outcast' stuff appears far more emperimental (i.e. the 'over the edge mix' of bjork's hyper-ballad) than stuff appearing under the b.h. name alone. in short, i have nothing against their collaborative efforts, and have nothing against mr. brown personally, but could it be that because beaumont is such a nice guy that maybe that mr. brown can have too much influence at times? i.e. sounding more experimental? not a downfall, i say! in fact, i wonder what might beaumont sound without mr. brown? i see a small parallel with speedy j's stuff (some of the slower, more atmospheric moments of 'g-spot') only a little less speedy i suppose. not that that's a bad thing, of course. my 0.02.

I'm suprised that with all this talk of beaumont hannant no one's mentioned psi-onyx. Apart from the track on AIii it's the only stuff of his I've got. Wonderful couple of tracks, pretty energetic and with an almost dark feel to them. Sorry for lack of description (I only just passed my English at school, I'm a scientist:). I was wondering how representative of his work this is. There's also an Autechre mix which has to be one of my all time fave Ae tracks. Well worth hunting out. Tim In every work of genius we recognise our own rejected thoughts; they come back to us with a certain alienated majesty.

i agree totally with ben on this one. i was even thinking about posting about this myself. he deserves much more recognition than he gets. tastes and textures vol 1 is one of my most favorite idm treasures. worth beating someone up for ('cept me). Has a great sense of melody and composition. always well thought out. everything seems to have a purpose. i also give him a lot of credit for experimenting with styles and sounds that were not easily accepted by people. i think he has suffered for his experimental approach. i think that is one of his great strengths, and that is why i always will always check his stuff out over just about anybody. i find it really odd that his releases, as well as a great deal of the output on gpr is so hard to come by nowadays. i order this stuff time & time again and get nothing in my boxes from the distributors. does anyone really know whats going on with the label? inquiring minds want to know pj -- pj>the exalted grand puba of mail order modern music 2905 o'donnell st, baltimore, md. 21224 fon: 410.675.2172 fax: 410.675.2373 www.modernmusic.com

Beaumont just released a new 12" last week under the guise "Noturno" called The Long Walk Home on the UK Melt label. It's a nice floor friendly tech-house release much in the same style as Swag, Primitive Urges and Richard Brown material. It was good but not essential IMHO. -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

The only one I know really well is Sculptured; it's quite good, if just a bit *too* wildly eclectic -- early IDM, synth-pop, range-folk (w/ Lida Husik), some kinda rap-thing. It's cool just to look at the liners, where he thanks probably the largest amount of artists ever seen on a scrap of notes (definitely the widest range; LFO to Mahler to the Kinks). Check out the full-on skinny at: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/x.exe?p=amg&sql=B183087 As far as I know, all he's done lately is production, on Bjork's Hyperballad (remix) and Husik's Faith in Space... .John.

and maybe tell >me if he's got any lps worth getting? Beau has been an IDM staple since his 1993 release Tastes & Textures Vol.1. I think he rates up there w/ Black Dog & early AFX as having made some of the best post-Detroit (I'm talking 1st wave Detroit) pure techno. Since the release of Sculptured, Husikesque (w/ Lida Husik), & Out Of Tune (by Outcast Productions, which is Beau & Richard Brown), it seems to me that he's been floundering a bit stylistically, trying to crossover into other genres with mixed results. Still, I thought the Notions Of Tonality EPs were brilliant, and I have reason to believe that the Tones album, if ever released, will be further explorations of Beau's brand of IDM-style techno. Unfortunately, Beau is stuck on Wayne Archibald's GPR label, which seems to be perpetually on the brink of bankruptcy. The release schedule has become increasingly sporadic, with last year's Digital Millenium cash-in comp. being the last release I know of. Tones has been promised for a couple of years now, and I'm worried it may never see the light of day. Another problem is that all the GPR stuff is now out-of-print, except maybe Digital Millenium - at least it's the only thing I see in stock anymore. So, if you get into Beau, be prepared to troll the FS/FT lists. Luckily, the only item that seems to be fetching collector's prices (so far) seems to be the Texturology Ltd. 2x12". Or you could find someone w/ a large Beau collection & a CD burner (hint hint ;). As far as rating Beau's stuff, starting w/ my faves & working down: Texturology Ltd. (this has nothing to do w/ the Texturology CD, though they look similar), Tastes & Textures 2 (Basic Data Manipulation), Notions Of Tonality 1&2, T&T3, T&T1, Psi-Onyx, Y03, Texturology, Ormeau, Sculptured, Husikesque, Evening at The Grange (Husik), Out Of Tune, & Rollercoaster. Unfortunately, it seems like Texturology & Sculptured are what most people hear, and I don't think they're good representations of his work. I'd like to know what Beau has been up to of late - the last release I know of is a remix on Bjork's Telegraph, & that was last year, wasn't it? On a side note, has anyone heard Cherry Bomb's (Richard Brown) Electronics for Dogs LP on Freedag Nuveaux? And have there been any releases on Beau & Richard's Mutant Disco label? Che

The "electronics for dogs" lp is excellent. a nice mixture of moody electronic tunes and a couple that are even playable for a dance floor. From listening tracks, four to the floor and some funkyness. you of course get your solid engineering of richard brown where every sounds sticks out in the mix pristinely. get it if you are a Richard Brown fan and can find it. _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ benny blanco /\ blancodisco: gamefx, inc. /\ /\ http://www.fcl-us.net/~benny/index.html -_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-
