same goes for me.. this is not too on-topic, but I am also starting the application process now. are there any in particular that have a strong electronic music section, or something related? currently i am most interested in applying to Carnegie Mellon, Brown, Tufts, Stanford, MIT, and I am looking into Cornell, Ithaca.. If you know about these, lemme know (even if it isn't for electronic music-type stuff)...thanks. . .',`' ;,',' / // christopher graves ',/ ,| \':;.,: |.]\.grav/krac5..;colongib&jujubomb

ACK! This whole thread about colleges is making me feel like the over-the-hill old man that I am. The time that I looked at and applied to colleges was back in the fall of 1986 (and just in case you can't do the math and figure out how old that makes me, my 28th birthday was just two days ago). Am I too old to be here? I fled an indie-rock chat room on the Web called the Cutie Club for the same reason (i.e. I felt too old to fit in). Should I leave here and just stick to the DroneOn and Bomp! mailing lists (both of which have a significant over-25 contingent)? Seriously, what would you say the approximate age range is for listeners of IDM music? And do you think there's a growing "generation gap" between fans of guitar-based rock and electronic dance music, as some people seem to suspect (i.e. guitar rock='20s and over, electronica=college age and under)? I'll tell you one thing, though... even if you do call me too old, I still won't give up my FSOL and Meat Beat Manifesto CDs! - John On Sun, 5 Oct 1997, chris r graves wrote:

That's an interesting question. I could tell you that most of my friends are just becoming interested in electronic music, and for some of them it's a harder transition than for others. I've only been into it myself for a couple of years after years of playing in "real" bands. I think it will just take some more time for everybody to catch onto it. bbn

No this is definintely not the case because you are forgetting that some of us have always listened to electronic music in one form or another. (Note: I also listen to other styles of music as well). For example acts like Yello, Aon, Depeche Mode and Colourbox were a main staple in my listening diet in the 80's. I haven't conveyed what i was trying to say very well, but i hope you'll get the general picture. Btw, i'm actually younger than you, but not by all that much. :) Regards, John

I'd go along with John here. I'm an old fart of 32 (?) but I'm a fan. It's certainly been around for a while though it's been called different names over time. Then again... this is somewhat of a recent phenom (esp. here in the States where people are just waking up to it) and what usually happens is that the 'old guard' is usually insulted by the new 'upstarts.' Then it gets watered down and mass-produced and everyone loves it! Jason Perfect Sound Forever Warped Perspectives on All Types of Music perfect-sound@furious.com http://www.furious.com/perfect
