I think this was clearly a purposeful move on his part. The placement of
the barcode on the front, the prominence of the obligatory 'compact disc
audio' on the disc label art, and the cheesy hadwritten track listing all
contibute to an aesthetic which a friend of mine compared to Whitehouse's
rerelease covers (for those of you unfamiliar Whitehouse is a power
electronics band who rereleased all of their early material with
identical sleeves and minimal track information). I think it is a play
on the concept of '...I Care Because You Do', implying that he really
doesn't (as we all probably suspect), especially since this album's
package design is unlikely to attract anyone. But the album is
nonetheless brilliant, and anyone who passes based on the packaging is
missing a real gem.
On a related note today I also picked up the new Plaid (Black Dog)
on Richard James' (or so I am told) 'Clear Records' label. Amazing
experimental/ambient/funk which everyone should check out if they get a chance.
