Well I stepped out only to buy a hat and I ended up going to Tweekin' Records. I bought 2 records and Aphex slipmats. I saw the Aphex Twin album with Digerdoo on it. I wasn't too impressed with it. I think some of this other albums are better. The other two records I picked up are Sven Van Hess: Planet Jupiter 6 and Sandoz:Dark Continent. And I must say Tweekin' 's cd collection is improving. There are a lot of interesting cd's there. cindy --

Well, while traveling great distances today to put a deposit down for a sublet, I made it over to Subtopia in NYC.. One of the first thing I noticed was the unbelievable number of new jungle labels.. phew!.. There were also about six new releases on GPR.. I must say, I really hated all but two, one being the Nev, the other something with the word sun in it.. There was a nice ditty by Mark Broom, definitely a name to watch.. A pretty, pinkish B12 release that sounds.. uh.. well.. like almost every other B12 record out.. I'd say that this one was a step in a good direction.. I want to reaffirm that the Jeff Mills tracs on Tresor are wicked.. The Juan R&S LP was nowhere to be found.. shucks.. Picked up two more Bunker releases (5 and 6).. All are very tracy, but they're fun, quirky Dj slabs.. There was a nice release on F communications called D.S. or sometin'.. I'm glad to see that electro is coming back into style.. The packaging thing has really gone off the deep-end, making me feel like I'm still into indie rock.. I'm just worried that the music will get lost in all the pretty colors.. However, as it always is when you go to a record store for the first time in a while, things seem to be flowing.. BTW, I heard the Carl Craig on Ministry of Sound.. It's so... un-Carl.. It sounds very progressive.. I like the E2E4 cut, but it doesn't go anywhere.. The other sides sounds like Fabi Paras wrote it.. who knows, maybe it'll grow on me.. As for the GPR stuff, I'm flat out dissin' this new bread of english stuff that has cool sounds, but completely unfunky beats and smalzy melodies.. see ya in hell. ** ******** ********** ********** ******** **B.orn.U.nder.a.R.hyming.P.lanet

|There was a nice release on F communications called |D.S. or sometin'.. I'm glad to see that electro is coming back into style.. f communications is one of the proverbial 'labels to watch'.. as far as i can tell f communications (f for france or french) is what fnac has morphed into.. aurora borealis is also out this week on that label, a slightly resistance d sounding track, and a few weeks ago laurent garnier & pascal f.e.o.s.' joint dune project also came out.. dune is fairly acidic but somewhat mellow, danceable at times but not necessarily meant expressly for dancing.. one song clocks in at 14 minutes, one at 12, and overall it could be something that interests not only trance fans, but people into intelligent also (so there.).. or it just might bore the hell out of you - listen before you buy of course, because it isn't for everyone.. i don't know if it was already mentioned (or possibly i already mentioned it) but higher intelligence agency's color-reformed ep is very nice.. four new mixes off the full-length, one by irresistible force, one by autechre, one by pentatonik, and one by a positive life..

I heard this (Aurora Borealis) today (yes folks, I made it to Hollywood to Beat Non Stop for the first time in 3 months). There was one OK track, but otherwise not very exciting (IMO). However, I *did* wet my pants over the new Virtual Symmetry on Eye-Q, so I bought that. Dunno if that's considered IDM, though. I also picked up the Eye-Q "Behind the Eye" comp, but that's probably considered Trance and not IDM too, so I won't mention it :-) This probably isn't IDM either, but it was nice to see that Moonshine put out Hardfloor's "TB Resuscitation" domestically (State-side, that is). Speaking of Laurent Garnier, I passed over that 2XL-2 (or whatever it is) comp. I only had time to scan it a little, but it didn't thrill me and the fact that the CD player thought it was 1 track pissed me off, so I tossed it back. Did I make a too-hasty mistake? I also threw back "Temple of Transparent Balls" ... I remember hearing people grumble about how FAX releases are so limited (500 copies, or somesuch?). Should I be surprised that I found 3 FAX CDs? Otaku's "Ambiant Otaku", Pete Namlook & Dr. Atmo's "Escape", and an Atom Heart live CD. I passed on the Atom Heart because the first 5 minutes all sounded like it was recorded in a wind tunnel, and it was all exactly alike. I'm outta my Industrial phase now, so this didn't wet my whistle. Bought the other two. Prices on CDs are insane. Collateral damage incurred: Hardfloor "TB Resuscitation" $16.99 US domestic, 1 CD Otaku "Ambiant Otaku" $18.99 import, 1 CD Eye-Q compilation $26.99 import, 1 CD - ouch! And Digipak too! Namlook & Atmo "Escape" $32.99 import, 2 CD - ouch! 30 %@$*$ bucks! Virtual Symmetry 12" $ 8.99 import - I used to pay $8.99 for LPs! ---------------------------- ------ Total 113.61 All for 4 CDs and one bloody 12" All I can say is, Jamie must have awfully rich parents or a damn good inheritance. I sure as h*ll can't keep up with things if 4 CDs and a 12" is over 100 dollars! Sheesh! - Greg P.S. And I don't dare mention their "Japanese tourist" clothing prices ...

The one I got is Eye Q 017. It has The V.S. (Fable mix) 6:26 / Vaporize 7:30 // The V.S. (Original mix) 5:41 Dunno if this is newer or older than the one you mention; it was up on the racks at the store, so I assume that it's new. It was right next to the new Dave Clarke (who?) and the F Communications stuff (DS and Aurora Borealis). - Greg

If it's the X-MIX-2 CD, I believe you might regret your decision! It's a wonderful cross-section of house and techno with a strong representation from Detroit (UR, +8, Definitive, Carl Craig, Rhythim is Rhythim). Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view) it's all mixed together as a single, long, 76 minute track. I've done the next best thing and memorized where the UR tracks start :) (In fact, I loved the Galaxy 2 Galaxy and the other UR track Final Frontier so much that I'm considering buying them on vinyl... and I don't even own a turntable... Guess I'll just stare at the grooves or something... Man, maybe we should pass the hat around and pay for a pressing of UR stuff on CD (assuming they gave their OK, of course)... Hmm, now that I think about it, isn't Final Frontier on the New Electronica 3 compilation?)

I'm sort of suspicious of the hype surrounding FAX "limited" releases. Although they aren't exactly common in Canada, I've seen them in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal, and I'm told they can be found in Ottawa without too much effort either. Canada isn't exactly overrun with techno-mad citizens, so I find it hard to believe there are only 500 copies out there in the entire world and 5-10% of them are in Canada...

I didn't think this was worth the $40 (Canadian) I paid for it. Half of it is good FAX-y dance or ambient, half of it is twiddly filler. I gave a quick listen to +N/Space on FAX by Atom Heart. Seemed to have some wonderfully gurgly minimal acidic bits. Better, IMHO, than the Ambient Otaku album. Rob

Mark Broom is an occasional collaborator with the Black Dog posse, I think this is the first release on his own. He also DJs regularly at the smaller, purer techno events in London.

Mark Broom has released (at least) two records on a label called A13 (anything to do with B12?). Some of the tracks on these 12"es (the Reapeat ones) have been made with Ed and Andy of Black Dog Productions. I quite like both of these records. A13 also released a Stasis 12" and a record by The Collective or something. I haven't got these records so i don't know if they're any good, but i think they are. -- +-----------------------------------+ | Hans Veneman | | E-mail: veneman@tv99ad.hacktic.nl | | phone: +31(0)3200-35266 | +-----------------------------------+

When I was in SF last weekend, I bought "X-MIX-2: The Tracks", which is a 3x12" containing all the source material for X-MIX-2. 13 delicious singles for $20. None of the tracks are brand spanking new, but it's great stuff nonetheless. I'm not sure if it's available on CD. Call your favorite record store.

You may also want to look into getting a UR compilation CD. There's "Revolution for Change", which is wonderful but on the old side, (came out after Final Frontier but before Galaxy 2 Galaxy), and "Into the Void" which I don't have, so I can't comment on. -Sho -- sho@physics.purdue.edu <<-- finger this account to find out what I'm having for lunch! <A HREF="http://physics.purdue.edu/~sho/homepage.html>Sho Kuwamoto</A>.

'Escape Into The Void' is quite good. It's a compilation of stuff from Submerge with tracks from The Martian, Mad Mike, Drexciya, The Suburban Knight and more. Just a bit older but possibly even better is 'Depth Charge 1'. This also features 'Final Frontier'! Tracks on this compilation are by Mad Mike, The Martian and Ghetto Tech. Both these compilations came out before Galaxy 2 Galaxy. A few moments ago i was listening to 'Final Frontier Part 2', which is on the double 12" 'Acid Rain III-Meteor Shower'. It's really good. -- +-----------------------------------+ | Hans Veneman | | E-mail: veneman@tv99ad.hacktic.nl | | phone: +31(0)3200-35266 | +-----------------------------------+

Yes, I'll second that. I've actually managed to get my hands on almost all the UR stuff that's available on CD. Unfortunately, I've never been able to track down Depth Charge 1. Perhaps I should try Record Time again... Question for all the really dedicated UR collectors... A friend of mine let me listen to a CD by The Final Cut. He claimed that Jeff Mills (or some portion of UR) was a member of the group. The band broke up and Jeff Mills left, although what was left of the group recorded an industrial-ish CD for Nettwerk (again under the name The Final Cut) that was stylistically quite different. I listened to the first CD, and I could swear that I heard that distinctive UR style on a number of the tracks. There was no track listing, liner notes, or any other helpful information included. So ... was this for real -- was Jeff Mills once a member of the group the Final Cut? Rob

Yes, this is true. Jeff helped with a record called 'The Bass Has landed' and the LP 'Deep Into The Cut'. After the album Jeff quit Final Cut. I haven't heard any of this, so i have no idea if it's any good. I also think the last few records i heard of Mr Mills weren't very good, a bit too hard/fast :( -- +-----------------------------------+ | Hans Veneman | | E-mail: veneman@tv99ad.hacktic.nl | | phone: +31(0)3200-35266 | +-----------------------------------+

From what I've heard of Jeff Mills ("Changes of Life" off Tresor II comp), it's a joke. But then some may like the hard but minimal stuff. But this song just sounded like a kid and his toys... -djkc

"Changes of Life" was a failed experiment ("let's make a really hard piano track"). The rest of the album from which that track is taken is one of the best (ahem) hardcore albums I've ever heard (_Waveform Transmission Vol. 1_). Check out X-103's _Atlantis_ to hear Mills doing what he (IMO) does best. ----------------------------------------------------------------- dave walker, detroit art services _ marmoset@msen.com freeke robot luv

No nay never... the Final Cut was a MOEV-like semi-industrial band from the Detroit area. Jeff Mills never had anything to do with them. | Dave Walker, Detroit Art Services (DAS) | | | | marmoset@msen.com At this point things get a little hazy. |

Is there an accompanying video for this? I know there was for X-MIX-1; I found it at Tower, believe it or not. -- Mark Turner mturner@netcom.com
