"intelligent dance music" is an okay name for a mailing list, but a horrible name for a genre, can we not all agree on that? and Warp only named their compilation "artificial intelligence", as in the scientific concept, they never claimed the music was more intelligent than other music. in fact, Warp called it 'listening music' in the liner notes. it was the creators of this list who named it. k -- constant shallowness leads to evil.

i always preferred the label "electronica" for the genre. But at the time IDM came to be because the UK was dancing in fields to 4-4 beat piano tracks inter-dispersed with hoover sounds. The only reason anyone would get annoyed at the term IDM is because it includes the term "Intelligent". That annoys people who have to compete with everything on every level and hurts their superiority complex. It's just a name, and should be gotten over. I think it should be called music. But people do need a way to lookout certain styles or ideas that they're searching for so categorisation does have a purpose. At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter. The "IDM" list was a point of reference, and by extension something that music journalists could use to describe the particular style of music that came in the wake of the Artificial Intelligence release on Warp. Just like any other genre name that's been made up by journos, producers etc. Think about it: Dubstep, Jungle, Fidget, Garage, Microhouse, Techno, Techhouse, 2step, Grime, microsound, etc. ad nauseam.... I'm pretty sure there aren't many producers or fans of those genres that obsess so much about what that music is called. IMHO I think that we're hard-wired for organizing things taxonomically, and I think we can all agree that this music categorically falls together. It's been 22 years since the term was coined, so I'm not sure if "rebranding" is in the cards for this or not, but ultimately I don't think matters nearly as much as the music. It is my favorite genre ehem subject of discussion! Idm is not a genre, it's just a new way of music all together, think about it how many genres that are genres that we can also call idm? Intelligent dance music, is probably the fourth circuit of the collective brain the new intelligence as consciousness or something, like when modern art hit the classical walls it wasn't a new classical genre it was a whole new way of looking at light and reality!
