Gotta say, I've had Spectrum since it came out on Planet Mu, and it still sounds like a generic not very well done version of the stuff that Mikey P, Tommy J and yes, even Ricky D J do a lot better. But then I picked up the Skam09 EP - this is the shit! This is brilliant, much better than the album. Listen to this if you think Jega's got nothing to offer. Similarly, wonderful though I think Music Has the Right to Children is, the Skam08 EP is even better (High Scores, Everything You Do Is a Balloon and nloxax in particular). As are a couple of other assorted things like the Michael Fakesch remix and the track on Diskono[x] (or is it [y]?) On the other hand, as far as gigantic disappointments go, the Lexaunculpt Oh Here Come Some Noises 12" is just that. All those people saying what a genius Alex is have obviously heard some very different music to this. It's boring beats without particularly evocative melodies and harmonies... nice production values but frankly BoC do a lot better with lo-fi production. I am yet to see the point of this - there's so much better stuff. Please don't take this the wrong way - I can see all these SoCal people's eyeballs exploding from the stress of reading this ;) I don't like it mostly because it's just not my sort of music, but then BoC, Jake Mandell, Gescom (sometimes) and others do similar stuff which I love. On the listens I've given it so far (about 4) it's done nothing whatsoever for me. And that last new-age ambient track is *completely* gratuitous. i ... kinda ... agree. it is rather a disappointment after all the hype on this.list, but i do see some potential. especially that seriously raw-ass funky track with the high pinging noise (i'll be fucked if i'm going to try to remember those dang post-Ae song titles). as for "all those people saying what a genius" the cat is, well, they're all very special people who get CD-Rs and we're not, so we'll just have to take their snotty little words for it. :)

heh. god forbid a divergent thought might cross their monitor. (mental note: start ridiculous thread comparing lexaunculpt to islam, boards of canada to christianity and pole to japanese shamanistic "hopping" cults from a pseudonymous address.)

interesting - i think jake mandell's got some skills when it comes to programming, but his 'ambience' could use a little roughing up. but i have yet to hear the worm inyerface cd. but i do think mr. mandell's steez smell less like a brown booth and more like his own.

it is! it sounds like something popul vuh would've dropped from one of their religious albums for being a bit too overwrought. some yutz (Steve81778@aol.com) wrote:

so isn't this still the record that everyone on this list was busting a nut over? most musicians despise their early material; so what? or are you just trying to retroactively abort the hype? some kinda...terminata....thing. in closing, i like _oh here's some noises_, but i'm hoping that mister culpt chooses to build on the more original aspects of it and not lean so heavily on the Ae-techniques (hey, the percussion's ratcheting down again!). wasting bandwidth since 1994, [gr] -- [http://listen.to/treblequake] [eleet fnema] 'my woman here, she's got a dozen names she's sunk our soldiers and they try to keep her tame...' Which was mostly people out here really hyping up his interesting live shows, I think. Of course the old 12" sucks. It sucks like a tornado. I heard it for the first time recently and wondered if this was that *other* Lexaunculpt. Anyone who hyped the 'here's some noises' record to you was just getting carried away in the heat of the orange county moment, I think. But! Lexaunculpt does rock, 12" aside.

As someone who just this last weekend joined that august group of cd-r snots, my two cents are: the material that's new is much, much better than the old stuff. You may still not like it, I'm sure a lot of people won't, but it's obviously much matured from the old jank. It's not completely mind-blowing, but it's good to listen to. I've been listening to it tons this week, and I'm not bored with it yet. It is too bad it's taking a while for a cd to be released, because after seeing him locally, and seeing people on the list expressing interest, I do want to see what the reaction will be.

Ow! I'm blind! Bliiiiind! No, but really. I wasn't impressed with that release when I just heard it, and I do like his new stuff a lot. So don't be *too* jaded. Some of my fellow socallers are a little easily excitable about lexaunculpt, but give the upcoming cd a try. It *is* a lot better. Even if you still hate it, I guarantee you won't hate it as much. :p Given some of the stuff that's gotten lots and lots of people excited and I found sub-impressive like red snapper or jega or whatever that doesn't float my boat, I think alex is worth at least a small bit of hype. Speaking of Jega, I bought that Jega record on planet mu with the mecha on the cover. Um, it's for sale if anyone wants it. Any "official" dates on this one yet (again)??? I've been waiting.....

I'm prepared to make the same offer. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's up.
