Gotta say, I've had Spectrum since it came out on Planet Mu, and it
still sounds like a generic not very well done version of the stuff that
Mikey P, Tommy J and yes, even Ricky D J do a lot better.
But then I picked up the Skam09 EP - this is the shit! This is
brilliant, much better than the album. Listen to this if you think
Jega's got nothing to offer.
Similarly, wonderful though I think Music Has the Right to Children is,
the Skam08 EP is even better (High Scores, Everything You Do Is a
Balloon and nloxax in particular). As are a couple of other assorted
things like the Michael Fakesch remix and the track on Diskono[x] (or is
it [y]?)
On the other hand, as far as gigantic disappointments go, the
Lexaunculpt Oh Here Come Some Noises 12" is just that. All those people
saying what a genius Alex is have obviously heard some very different
music to this. It's boring beats without particularly evocative melodies
and harmonies... nice production values but frankly BoC do a lot better
with lo-fi production. I am yet to see the point of this - there's so
much better stuff.
Please don't take this the wrong way - I can see all these SoCal
people's eyeballs exploding from the stress of reading this ;) I don't
like it mostly because it's just not my sort of music, but then BoC,
Jake Mandell, Gescom (sometimes) and others do similar stuff which I
love. On the listens I've given it so far (about 4) it's done nothing
whatsoever for me. And that last new-age ambient track is *completely*
gratuitous.
