I noticed that no one followed up on this post. Am I the only one on IDM that bought the Synectics CD? (No review, sorry; I haven't heard it yet.) While I'm RePHLeCTiNG, I also bought Kinesthesia Vol. I. Jamie Hodge mentioned that the originals were purple, but mine has an orange outer sleeve with a sorta-kinda-monochromatic fractal type of pattern running through it. Is that different from the original? Thus becoming the way to differentiate between the two? - Greg

No, yours is the same as the 1993 release. I'm not sure what Jamie was talking about.. :: Alan M. Parry :: fluid@hyperreal.com :: <finger me for PGP key> :: http://hyperreal.com/~fluid

I bought it. $13.99 new. Should've known something was wrong. Nice purple jewel case, though. Track 1 starts off with a typical trance beat. No magic here. Then it goes into spineless, noodly ambience for 15 minutes or so, and with 2 and a half minutes to go, picks up a beat again, only to fade out. Track 2 starts off with formulatic trance again, and then gets this deep wurbly sound. However, as a whole, it sounds like it's going in two directions. Track 3 is another trancey tune. I don't know how to describe it other than vanilla, generic trance. Track 4 sounds nice, and on the idm/ambient border fence. Track 5 goes back into the trance, and dabbles in the 303 arena for a bit, but nothing to write home about. Track 6 continues in the melodic trance vein; I like the bit after 2:10, and probably the highlight of this cd for me. Track 7 picks up the trance pace, but doesn't do a thing for me, even with the 303 action. Track 8 is another noodly ambient piece, typical of some FAX stuff I have. So, I'm unimpressed with it as a whole. Definitely a listen before you buy type of purchase. For me, it has some moments, which add up to under 5 minutes of interesting music. But your mileage may vary. CAT 006 CD, (c) 1993. no track listing. Synectics are M. Repetto and S. Riesen. Lotta purple. I've got it too, and it's pretty nifty. I don't have it here at work with me, so I can't offer too much of a detailed review, but if you like clinky-clanky Rephlex stuff, you'll dig this. The opening track is especially nice - somewhere around 20 minutes long, and gorgeous.

What *I* want to know is why the hell was the re-release of Vol. I deleted so quickly? The shop that I work at pre-ordered both Vol II and the Vol I re-release well in advance, but only got he new one along with a nice little deletion notice for the first. Grrr. Other than that, though, yesterday was a good day for new stuff (all vinyl, too... first time that's happened to me in a while)... got the Kinesthesia, the Gescom EP on Clear, and the new CJ Bolland 12"/10" pack. Didn't get a chance to listen to 'em yet. Greg onNow: Jake S. "Makesaracket" (although as the summer draws to a close, it might be time to retire this one for a little while...) :-)

I think Purple Universe is a very strong ambient record. Even its infrequent beats don't seem to add up to IDM as much as they seem ambient. I really like its longer tracks which endlessly subtly evolve. Headphone listening is definitely a plus. Track 4 and Track 6 are my favorites. 4 is a beautifully entwined melodic piece, and 6 has some cool breathy beats that do nice things. Overall, think it's a really good album that reveals more with each listen. A quote from the RePHLeX multimedia discography: "Secondly, we aim to demonstrate to the rest of the world that British dance music CAN be entirely original. In the main, we plan to disregard the all-to-common breakbeat and resist the laziness of sampling other people's music. We also want to show that you can make a kick-ass drum beat without preset drum-machine sounds. R.I.P. TR909!!" Unless I'm very much deceived, the 909 is very much alive and well on the recent Synectics release. Nothing wrong with that, I say, but it does seem to contradict rather the above statement. NB: this is just an observation, not particularly a criticism Adam Huffman
