it's very simple, really. aphex is about the safest choice a commercial company can take while pretending that it's actually a huge risk-taking maneuever. "we need to spice up our ads with something that The Kids can really relate to!" "well, how about this techno stuff i've heard about? supposed to be really underground and happening!" "i love it! who's hot right now?" "oh this aphex twin fella's on the cover of option..." "draw up the contract!"

switch to elm and learn about its filtering functions.

ah, the old "if your opinion doesn't match mine, you're a constipated asshole" argument. damn, anybody got any ex-lax??

oh, this is my second favorite: if you don't like it, you don't understand it. reminds me of an episode of The Young Ones where rik is trying to send a telegram and he's yelling at some old guy that "the only reason you don't understand our music is because you don't like it!!"

Nope, read my message again. You'll find I said that people who dismiss it don't understand it. I can understand why people might not LIKE Aphex. Musical tastes are highly subjective. There's a BIG difference between saying something sucks and just admitting it's not your bag.

I wouldn't normally step into these arguments but it seems a bit odd for ad exec.s to be saying this sort of thing for marketing tyres. Kids don't buy tyres, middle aged people with a house and family buy tyres and I don't get the impression they buy a particular brand of tyre because their kids pester them about a cool track they saw on the ad. Even if you take into account that Pirrelli are a bit more hip than other tyres it probably means that the people buying them are just rich yuppies who don't know anything about techno and won't be inspired to buy tyres because of Richard James. Well there's my couple of pennies. Enjoy. Lots of love Tim One of the least common things in the world today is: common sense.

My last $.02 on this topic... Whenever I see the commercial, it always sounds driven and pulsating. Kind of like you're clipping right along, with that runner. Then, at the very end, you realize it's a tire ad. Makes sense that a tire ad would want to convey a sense of speed and motion. -- guyjr@wc240.residence.gatech.edu a.k.a., Guy Elden Jr.
