I was a little bit disappointed with this LP on first listen (and maybe it's because I've only listened to it once).. I thought that everytime they would build up a groove, the production would hold it back. It sounds really washed-out to me - way too much reverb when the mix is really dense. For the sake of comparison, the Aphex Twin's ambient works is really washed-out too, but it's also very minimal, so you can hear the way the elements of the piece work with one-another. Also, he tends to keep some instruments dry, or not as heavily reverbed which seems to add dimension. The drums don't kick on the Sabres of Paradise either - all of the kick drums sound like they're being played inside an elevator shaft. I'll have to listen to it again. Can anyone point out anything to listen for specifically? Any cool elements in the music? Thanks, Darshan

Yeah, "Wilmot". It really took me a while to understand how you're supposed to listen to Sabres records. They're too slow to dance to. They're too boring to listen to at home. But then I was at this party. The kind of party where everybody's just standing around, talking to each other, drinking lots of alcohol. They played Sabres of Paradise. It was perfect. Nobody was listening to it, no one was dancing, but it was great background music. Ahaaa, how academic... - chris@minsk.docs.uu.se <http://www.update.uu.se/~chris/>

A new compilation has recently come out called Shopping. It contains rock, cheesy techno, and some good techno. I was wondering if anybody could give me some info on the track Jam J - James V Sabres of Paradise. It is a deep, slow dub track. I was wondering if people know if this is actually Sabres mixing James, and what the original song happens to be. Thanks in advance, pHil Now playing: Aphex Twin "on" EP

This is originally from a single, James VS. the Sabres Of Paradise "Jam J"..it's a thirty minute ambient-dub excursion by the Sabres, and an *essential* ambient-dub purchase IMHO. I believe the original is on James' album _Laid_, and this is basically a remix. four parts in thirty minutes. Put it on and jus' chilllll. :) mikebee on now: Massive Attack: Blue Lines (anyone got a release date for the new album?) I"d most definitely put this in an 'ambient' category. :)

It's the Sabres mixing James. I thought it was cool when I heard it, but I only had so much money so I had to pass the single up. @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ Mick - "Who's fighting and what for? I know that I mentioned this last week, when I asked for opinions on a few CD's I noticed in the music store... Well, thanks for the op's that I got! I picked up E.i.A. along with Hardfloor's TB Resuscitation, and now I'm really enjoying both. Excursions isn't as 'ambient' as I had thought it would be...I guess I'm used to listening to friends' more 'bleepy' stuff and FSOL. But it lives in my player now. :) The Hardfloor is great, too. I know that 303's are cliched to death, but I really love the way they sound. :) I also did a really stupid thing...picked up Orbital's 'Are We Here' single on CD, when I already own the 12" 2-set. I actually *forgot* that I had it! Subliminal trainspotting? :) Enjoy, Jim . . . . <skoop+@pitt.edu>:DaTaMaTiON/project.flux.95('repetition.is.a.form.of.change')

what do you mean? 303's have been used for ages. hardfloor's 'acperience ep' sounded cliched to me when it came out. listen to phuture and you will understand. as for recent use of the tb-303, i think only delerium have put the much used to death little silver glurper to any good use at all. and richie hawtin too, although i'm not trying to kiss up by saying this like everyone else on this list has been doing for the past day because they saw a post by richie...;P hardfloor have been sucked up by their own 303 noodlings and haven't put forth anything worthwhile in their last few singles and ep's. god forbid that they ever release another album.

Check out Structure and DJungle Fever for wild 303 madness. Another is Dance Extacy 2001 (or is it 2000?). Also check out the new Air Liquide for some good 303 twiddling. As far as Detroit 303 programming, I think Mad Mike is the undisputed king. -robert ______________________________________________*AudioElectronic*_____ "If BOTH the SAW and the PULSE switches are on, sonic explorers \ then both sawtooth and pulse waves are selected. \ This combination creates an extremely fat sound." there is no doubt that it signalled a resurgence in the 303's use. In Europe anyway.

Yeah, but the early acid like phuture, armando etc. only used one acid line at a time. True, that was the real innovation (Phutures "Phuture Jacks" absolutely blew me away the first time I heard it), but Hardfloor took it to a new dimension with their build-ups and multiple acid lines.

Well they just did! - "Respect" its called, and it actually does vary a lot more in texture. It's a 4-out-of-5-star LP for me, but I liked 'em all along, so I'm not sure if it would be your cup of tea. I Don't understand why they put in a limited 10" with 2 trax off the "TB Resuscitation" LP in exactly the same mixes - apart from allowing me to phase, double beat and generally mess these two songs about. Also I think as acid303 rushes go, "fish & chips" is the equal of any, so there. J ^ James Skilton aka Steady J - jamess@firefox.co.uk ^---+ What's in the basket? My Brother!

I remember reading somewhere it's a song by the early 80's disco/New Romantic band Hayzee Fantazee (sp?). On the other hand, someone said it's a pun on the Sex Pistols... Go figure. ERkki OnNow: U.N.K.L.E. - Time Has Come EP

Good ol' Andy stated that the name is borrowed from the name of a Hayzee Fantasee track (I know I just butchered that spelling...) Info was pulled offa the liner notes to "Septic Cuts", and as Andy said on them thar notes... im sure he's just saying how much we suck here in the states by puttin' more trax on Deep Cuts than Septic Cuts (the prior being the uk version of Septic Cuts). --,__ (mRay) z943159@corn.cso.niu.edu

I was just reading an article about Chechnya, and in the bibliography the author cited a book entitled "Sabres of Paradise". Spooky? I think so! It was written by Lesley Blanch in 1960, and published by Viking out of New York - For those of you who are really that bothered. Personally, I think I'll just sit in and listen to the record one more time. Rob.

just picked up Sabres Of Paradise "Versus" EP. remixes by depth charge, chemical brothers, nightmares on wax, lfo & in the nursery. excellent stuff! depth charge contributes two mixes which are remarkably sample-free given his usual penchant for throwing the entire dialog track of a movie into his songs. anyway, they have the patented j. saul kane magic - gritty grungy hip hop with psychotic bowel-melting bass. the chemical brothers mix is another winner, again, nothing too far removed from their usual cuisine, but this souffle is definitely hi-phat, if you get my meaning. chunky and funky. i like the nightmares on wax track, which is odd since i don't really like anything else i've heard by them. it's got a nice stoner jazz mo'wax kinda head trip feel to it. excellent bassline. the lfo mix is rather repetitive. i don't think they make the transition from bleep all that well. stick to the techno noises, guys. in the nursery completely re-do "haunted dancehall" in their usual wagnerian orchestral style. it's good but the last time i went through my record collection i wound up selling all my in the nursery discs which i guess means i'm kinda over them... ---- another compilation i picked up which, i realize, is rather old, but i wanted to mention it because it has the kind of title which is likely to make IDMers skip it. it's called AMBIENT AURAS... but despite that, most of the tracks are fairly danceable. track listing: higher intelligence agency - alpha 1999 (pentatonik remix) biosphere - baby interphase (remix) aphex twin - on alter ego - undersea girl state of flux - the news neuro project - lovechile centuras - tokyo taucher & koma - happiness (dr. atmo mix) centry meets the music family - release the chains dust brothers - if you kling to me, i'll klong to you bandulu - run run quite delicious. -- Name: Jon Email: jsd@cyborganic.com Web: http://www.cyborganic.com/People/jsd
