I was a little bit disappointed with this LP on first listen (and maybe
it's because I've only listened to it once).. I thought that everytime
they would build up a groove, the production would hold it back. It
sounds really washed-out to me - way too much reverb when the mix is
really dense. For the sake of comparison, the Aphex Twin's ambient
works is really washed-out too, but it's also very minimal, so you can
hear the way the elements of the piece work with one-another. Also,
he tends to keep some instruments dry, or not as heavily reverbed which
seems to add dimension.
The drums don't kick on the Sabres of Paradise either - all of the
kick drums sound like they're being played inside an elevator shaft.
I'll have to listen to it again. Can anyone point out anything to
listen for specifically? Any cool elements in the music?
