Further to the thread about MBV (IMHO a *top* band) being almost IDM, I'm suprised that no-one's mentioned Spacemen 3/Spiritualised in the ambient rock stakes; if you don't believe me (doubters!) have a listen to the Big City/Drive ep (Spacemen 3) or the album Lazer Guided Melodies (Spiritualised). Both these are very much minimal drone rock; sound to wash over you and do your head in. Vastly underrated (I would like to say 'and seminal' to fill in the cliche, but I can't think of anyone sounding like them off the top of my head) and the business live. Well worth a listen. Regarding Spacemen 3: "Head Full of Shit" is one of the most beautiful songs in existence methinks... Isn't there a "drone" list somewhere? I heard about one a little while back but never got an address...

Yes! Spacemen3 all the way. In addition, I would add Sonic boom's newer band Spectrum and their "Soul Kiss (Glide Divine)" LP. As Jamie Hodge would say, BIG UP! stu 8)
