Well, if that's the case, then Morris must have added repitition to the stew, because the first three tracks definitely repeat. The last track isn't repetitive per se, (not in the sense that there's a riff or a rhythm track playing), but there are definitely repeating elements. If you know "Tal Coat," from Eno's 'On Land,' you might have an idea of what I'm getting at, although "Under Water" doesn't sound anything like the Eno track in terms of texture. I picked up Pete Namlook's latest album "Air" yesterday and I must confess his kind of ambience is too "hardcore" for me. I can't stand the Brian Eno type of ambience. I get restless. There has to be some kind of repetitive melody or rhythm or whatever. I like ambient house, not "ambient music". - chris

Well Dreamfish is half Mixmaster Morris: the face behind the Irresistable Force, the guy who remixed Chill Out or Die and is well known for doing innovative ambient sets for hours on end. With a Rising High logo bleached into his hair and a gaudy plastic version around his neck, lots of reflective clothes (diffractional grating?) and an arrogant attitude, he is pretentious at best. Lots of flashy pictures in the last issue of England's magazine, The Face along with an "ambient special" article... but I digress.... Namlook, who is Mr. FAX Records out of Germany releases two records a week limited to 500 copies worldwide with special compilations running up to a thousand. Jonah Sharp of San Fransisco's Space Time Continuum says that he's very organized because he can whip out a track in three hours. Also on FAX I've seen Compilations 1-5, Ambient compilations 3-4, and the albums Namlook (just released) and 2350 Broadway (with Tetsuo Inoue, the thrid Sequential guy)... And of course Sequential's S/T which I picked up last summer. Plus a whole bunch of other stuff.. This guy really must release two records a week, without sacrificing anything in quality. Up to the start of December, e'd released 77 12" singles and 31 CDs. I'm not so sure about never sacrificing anything in quality. There's some good stuff in there, but some of it is rather mundane 'let's sit in front of a keyboard and do string sweeps for an hour' stuff. The claims that he only puts out 500 copies of each seem to be rather at odds with the amount of copies of his stuff that's found lying around in London record shops these days. -- Stephen Hebditch TQM Communications steveh@orbital.demon.co.uk

Alright, enough is enough. I think it's time to show a little credit where credit is due. Everyone seems to be going on and on about Richard James (don't get me wrong, I fall into the category of near-adoration) as the almighty technomessiah come to save us all from the sonic wastelands, but nobody has even *mentioned* Pete Namlook except in ref. to the rumoured collaboration with the afore-mentioned trance-savior. Well, it's time to break the silence! Pete Namlook is the New God!! Here and there, in tiny reviews in such magazines as Select, Namlook has been praised as the _real_ genius of the genre, but nobody has ever heard of him. I attribute this to the fact that the stuff he releases on his own label, Fax, is virtually impossible to get your undeserving hands on (The guy I know at my fav CD shop told me most of it is limited to 500 copies worldwide) but three of his recent works have been released on Rising High. So why isn't everybody gushing over his stuff the way I am? Right now I'm listening to Air II and my whole body is tingling from the beauty and *life* of his music! No, I'm not crazy, and I know what I'm talking about. James, Hawtin, BDP, Reload, Air Liquide... none of these guys have moved me the way Namlook has. Pete, if you're out there, I give you all the respect in the world. For everyone else, if you think you like ambient and trance, you will *LOVE* Namlook!!! (If anyone disagrees, I don't want to come off as some pretentious asshole, but what is wrong with you?) I don't know. I like Namlook a lot, and own much of the FAX catalog, but I'd say that Namlook is not everyone's cup of tea. His brand of ambience doesn't really appeal to everyone, especially those that prefer a bit more dynamics such as beats. I'd say that ambient is his forte, although some works as Sequential and 4Voice have been good. Some of his hardcore stuff has not been that great (e.g. Deltraxx). Maybe I'm just jealous. As I type, Mixmaster Morris, Space Time Continuum, and THE PETE NAMLOOK are performing up in San Francisco while I sit in a deserted computer lab. But I bet his live thing ends up on CD, as two previous stints have (as Astrogator and The Dutch Side of The Milky Way). Yes, some of the ambient can be rather fishbowl like...and when it does have beats, sometimes it's overly repititious. But yes, 4Voice, and Escape, have great kicking trance as far as dance stuff. My favorite are "Music Hypnotizes," and "Escape to Neptune" (track with the samples from Aliens "Everybody online" and "We're in the pipe, five-by-five"). -DJKC

Hmmm, I feel almost the opposite. I think his "trance" is a good but rather repetitious ("Is everybody online? Is everybody online?" Yes dammit! Shut up and get on with it, if you know the song, you know what I mean.) What I really like is how _different_ his ambient stuff is. I don't know, it's not really trance, and it's not always very ambient. I guess I just really fall for the "concept album" thing. Variety is the spice of life :) Crispin -----

you have got to be kidding. namlook is a very prolific guy, no question. but i have to wonder if that's in his best interest. he should be more selective about what he puts out. i have heard some good stuff from him though - the dreamfish collaboration with mixmaster morris is great. and his live set here in SF this weekend was also very good. but i haven't liked ANY of his hard trance stuff - escape to neptune is just awful. simplistic and boring. that's my opinion. The current information I have ends with the next release which is: PS 08/40 Music to Films 1 (CD) 12/94 Ambient with Dr. Atmo & Oliver Lieb "Kooyanisquatsi" [Oliver Lieb is also known as Spicelab and releases material on the Eye-Q label and it's Harthouse sublabel.] I'll post a list of only the releases that are new and expecting and I'll send the whole list out to the archives. Snake Charmer is a pretty good IDM tune - again that shuffley ambient feel to it while Sad Alliance is an OK ambient track. I was kind of worried about this CD. I was never really crazy about Pete Namlook on his own. His style is rather minimal and spacey. I like simplicity but I also like variety. With Ritchie Hawtin, I dig his tranced out dance music. However, if you listen to some of the ambient tracks on the FUSE album, they just don't seem that interesting to me, especially "theychx" which goes on for over 13 minutes. On the Plastikman album, only a couple of the songs that lean towards the ambient side seem like filler material to me. The good thing though is that my roommate took the risk of buying it and it turns out to be much better than I expected. I think this was a really good collaboration for the two of them. Ya, I got the latest discography 2 days ago. I faxed FAX (my first fax from my 14k/fax modem!) and got a nice letter from DJ Criss (manager of A&R) along with the discography. His response was EXTREMELY fast. I've never seen airmail come through so fast! Is this the original soundtrack to the film? The film itself is incredible -- a collage of images showing change- city streets, budding plants, erupting volcanoes. I've been digging for the soundtrack for some time.

I highly doubt that FAX has licensed the OST, and besides, Atmo and Lieb didn't score the film, Philip Glass did. More likely it's a "music inspired by..." deal.

Nope, the original soundtrack is by Philip Glass. Can't remember who released it. The film's quite a few years old now, so I guess the soundtrack album could have been deleted by now..... Cosmic

The second film in the trilogy is Powaqqatsi, though I'd hardly call it new. The third film hasn't (as far as i'm aware) been made yet, though if anyonw knows to the contrary, please tell me.... Cosmic

Hmmm, I could well be wrong, but I believe that "Baraka" was made by the same guy. It sounds similar in content (beautiful scenes from around the world) but I haven't seen either (or any) of them yet. And I call myself a film major...Well, actually _I_ don't. Crispin -----

nope, the director of baraka (ron fricke) was the cinematographer on koyannisqatsi and powaqaatsi, but the director of k & p was godfrey reggio. all 3 have a very similar look, since fricke was involved with all 3. (he's also done some IMAX stuff which looks similar.) /jon

Nope, it was directed by Ron Fricker (?), who was the cinematographer involved in Koyaniqatsi and Powaqqatsi. It is not the third film of the trilogy.... Cosmic

A whole 60 minutes of basically one patch and one chord. I can't even go to sleep while listening to it because it annoys the s**t out of me. Well, don't take that disc as a first impression! They don't always count. Winter is indeed very monotonous (that is, mono-TONE-ous). In fact, someone said the last half of the disc is just the first half backwards, and I believe they are right! But, it's not much different than listening to a didgeridoo (though I think a didgeridoo has a better sound-texture). However, Namlook's other Ambient stuff is relatively better. I, personally, prefer the fast trance stuff FAX puts out. Is there anyone out there that could separate the FAX discography into Ambient and Trance categories? I'd like to know what I'm missing as far as Trance. I like Escape, 4Voice, and Subsequence stuff. It's fast, kickin, travelling-through-the-Holland-tunnel- at-a-hundred-miles-an-hour Trance! For ambience, I recommend Locust on Apollo/R&S -- "Weathered Well" is the latest LP. Much more mystical, organic, and alien-like than Biosphere's "Patashnik" (on the same label). Now that I think about it, Locust reminds me of Seefeel's "Plainsong". =Seasons Greetings=Winter= may be FISHBOWL ambience, but don't be discouraged by first impressions. -DJKC

Boy oh boy oh boy, I guy can't exaggerate anymore! If anyone got past all my blatant gushing, they would see that what I was praising in my original post were Namlooks concept albums (like Silence, Air, Dreamfish etc.) These albums are more than just collections of great songs, they are musical pieces, with movements and themes and "flavour". I too think his attempts at more conventional trance are so-so, but I really think his full length albums are very strong -- musically. I don't want to dance all the time, nor do I want to vedge (sp?) out all the time either. I think variety is the future of techno, and I was really just trying to suggest that Namlook deserves recognition for the boundaries he is continually pushing. Anyway, I guess that's all I really wanted to say. It was just more fun to say it the other way :). "Well I don't care what anybody else thinks, I still like Pete" ;) Aren't opinions fun? Several people have mentioned Baraka, an excellent film, but not part of the same series. The only connection is that Baraka was directed by the cinematographer who worked on Koyanisqatsi and Powaqqatsi..... Cosmic

Baraka is a fantastic cosmic wonderful brainfuck of a movie with a gorgeous soundtrack that mixes all sorts of traditional world music with a modern synthy score provided by Michael Stearns. It's really really really really really good. If you get the chance to see it on the big screen, GO. It just won't work on a TV set.
