You actually give the tracklist for volume 2 here. The first volume has "Planet Rock" and...oh jeez, can't remember the title offhand, but it's been sampled everywhere, the track with a robot voice saying "It's ti-i-i-i-i-ime..." - oh, and "Rockit," of course.

There are some Egyptian Lover CD's out, not that I recommend them much. You'd probably dig the first two Art of Noise albums. The other night I bought 'Music Madness Plus' by Mantronix on CD used. I'm sure it's way out of print, and the rapping on it is quite weak (weak voice, wack lyrics), but there's some excellent drum programs on it. Incidentally, the Beastie Boys sampled Mantronix on "Finger Lickin' Good." I was wandering through a Camelot Music store last week, and found this compilation called 'Street Jams - Electric Funk', which is released on Rhino Records. It's actually very good - I like most of the stuff on there, although some of the tracks are a little lame ('The ladies, the ladies, the ladies drive me crazy..'). They're all classics though, and from what I understand, there's also a second volume. Has anyone seen these around? The first one includes (let's see if I can remember all of them..): Siberian Nights - Twilight 22 Computer Age - Newcleus Egypt, Egypt - Egyptian Lover Pack Jam - Jonzun Crew Reckless - The Glove, David Storrs, and Ice-T <- Fuckin' fat; this was my favorite song for a while when I was little. R-9 - Cybotron <- Early, early Detroit - I had never heard this sound in its original form before I bought this compilation, although I can hear its influence all over.. (even in stuff like early Die Warzau). Not house. When I Hear Music - Debbie Deb <- Cheesy, but an urban classic. That 'Ladies' Track (I forgot who did it) A 122 BPM Drum Track from the Jive Rhythm Tracks compilation (programmed by Roger Linn! (of Linn 9000 Drum Machine fame) Funky Little Beat - Connie Let The Music Play - Shannon <- Ahh, nostalgia. Still playin' this on 45, but it's nice to hear it on CD! Does anyone have any other recommendations for similar compilations? I'm really interested hearing all of this old shit! (I wish that I wasn't so careless about keeping/labelling my tapes when I was little - I would've still been listening to this stuff!) Thanks! Enjoy, Darshan

Yeah..i used to have that set. Its a two volume deal..The best of the early 80s breakin music. Its got what we call "the beat"...that infinitely sampled 122 bpm song...its cool to have all that stuff... If you are really intterested in the era/genre...The egyptian lover has rereleased all his old albums on disc and also he has released a 93 version called "pyramix" which is a continuous mix of all the good stuff plus a new track call "get high get xed get drunk get sexed" or something like that...but it sounds like bad kyper...i reccomend "one track mind" and "on the nile" for the best egyptian lover stuff....also there are other la technofunk compilations out now...with unknown dj etc...also egyptian empire has rereleased old rodney o joe cooley stuff...remixed by egyptian lover... well theres my two cents... later jason

Yup. Recently a number of compilation CDs of old freestyle music have been released. (Old freestyle is basically Latin-influenced hi-nrg with a hint of Miami bass.) I've been buying them cuz this is what got me into dance music in the first place (even before new wave and industrial). It would take a pretty wild imagination to really classify any of this as idm, though. "Freestyle's Greatest Hits", Turnstyle Records (dist by Big Beat Records), 1992 1) Judy Torres - "No Reason to Cry" 2) Sweet Sensation - "Sincerely Yours" 3) Nice & Wild - "Diamond Girl" 4) Giggles - "Love Letter" 5) Sandee - "You're the One" 6) April - "Someone to Hold" 7) Nancy Martinez - "For Tonight" 8) Shannon - "Give Me Tonight" 9) Company B - "Fascinated" 10) Pajama Party - "Over and Over" 11) Safire - "Don't Break My Heart" (written/produced by Omar Santana) 12) Trinere - "I'll Be All You Ever Need" 13) D'Ztre - "Forever Amor" 14) Tiana - "First True Love" "Best of Freestyle", Turnstyle Records (dist by Atlantic Records), 1992 1) Linear - "Sending All My Love" 2) Pajama Party - "Yo No Se" 3) Shannon - "Let the Music Play" 4) Corina - "Give Me Back My Heart" 5) Genuine Parts - "Did It Fee Like Love" 6) Giggles - "Hot Spot" 7) Company B - "Perfect Lover" 8) Debbie Deb - "When I Hear Music" 9) GT - "I Need You" 10) Yvonne - "There's a Party Going On" 11) Cynthia - "Endless Nights" 12) Sweet Sensation - "Hooked On You" 13) Chrissy I-eece - You Should Know By Now" 14) The Beat Club - "Security" (!!!)
