Sorry to bore you with more babble about things most of you aren't able to see. I'm watching MTV's Chill Out Zone and they just played the new video by Aphex Twin ("On"). It was very good, much better than any of his previous videos. Tidal waves washing back and forth, a cut-out figure of Richard swirling around on the beach, lots of strange things to do with the sea... The song was quite good as well. - chris@minsk.docs.uu.se

How about compiling a load of videos on tape for all to see? :) :flu'id (floo'-)

It wouldn't do us much good unless somebody is willing to shell out the cash to convert the video from PAL to NTSC. Or, if anybody has access to a convertor, that would be nifty. But, unfortunately, video tapes from Europe just aren't compatible. :( -- d i g t h e m u s i c , k i d s . . . ______________________________________________________________dvmiller+@osu.edu

aahhh...being from England myself, I knew that English ones wouldnt work, but wasnt sure if that followed for the whole of Europe. Video conversion is available, but isnt cheap :( I would've thought that US-MTV would've caught on by now... :flu'id (floo'-)

it's NOT that expensive! going rate around here is $25 per tape. if i got a 2hr tape converted and charged people $7 for copies i'd make back my money in no time even taking into account the cost of the tape and shipping. would you all be willing to pay $7 for a copy? of course, it'd be a copy of my copy... Now that you put it that way, it makes more sense. I was thinking on more of an individual basis. Id pay $7, of course, this still means someone compiling a bunch of these videos together into a decent length tape. Is the entire show usually worthwhile?? What else can we expect?? If someone decided to undertake this, the results could be very nice.. :flu'id (floo'-)

First someone makes a compilation from vhs tapes then converst it and then copies it again to individual tapes. That's three generations and we're talking VHS here :) Isn't there anyone out there who tapes all Chill Out Zone & other nice progs in broadcast quality betacam and has a converter to use? Damn, almost forgot that I am in the PAL, MTV Europe -zone myself :) cheers, samu -- Copies of various MTV Europe shows available for $50 a piece. Call 555-MTV-RIP-OFF and save our day.

I'll $7 for this also! I wasn't really interested until I saw the playlist. Looks like it could be fun. Don donpierr@netcom.com --

You can, and in fact any place that's only charging $25 to convert a 2-hour tape is probably using one to do the conversion. They aren't cheap though, and tend to be specialty items. -- Lazlo (lazlo@triton.unm.edu)

I think you are talking about different things here. Mark probably means transcoding VCRs that make either pseudo PAL or pseudo NTSC (depending on which system you're using) of the original signal. This signal can be handled and displayed by most modern TV sets as if it was true PAL or NTSC, but it cannot be copied to another VCR as true PAL or NTSC (it has got something to do with meddling with the TV's AGC circuitry I believe). Anyway, Lazlo probably means inexpensive true converters such as the Panasonic (or National) NV-W1 that can do conversions from any standard to any standard and copy them too. It can also handle the hi-fi stereo audio tracks from any standard, something which the pseudo-coding machines usually cannot handle. And as a last note, I'd like to point out that the standards conversion done with NV-W1 is nothing spectacular but quite usable for music video trades (especially if you're converting from PAL to NTSC). I hope that helps. cheers, samu -- "The past is the only dead thing that smells sweet."

Also, in theory at least, you can do PAL <> NTSC (and PAL <> SECAM and NTSC <> SECAM) through the new Mac AV computers -- they include scan conversion hardware. You still need both a NTSC and a PAL VCR, though. | Dave Walker, Detroit Art Services (DAS) | | "I don't read, I just guess" | | marmoset@msen.com -Happy Mondays, "Wrote For Luck" |

In Australia, and undoubtedly Europe too, we have Video's that can play both NTSC and PAL on PAL televisions (some interpolation is done to fill the gaps in the line numbers) - these aren't expensive either. Can youg get these in the US ? No, I'm not suggesting you go out and buy one to watch 5 minutes of MTV ;-) Cheers, Mark P.S. You should see MTV in Australia - truly appalling!!!
