Just got two excellent new releases from the Mille Plateaux/ Force Inc/Position Chrome/Ritornell label collective. Here are the infos on each + some comments. --------------------------------------------------------------------- If you think glitchy electronica is just pops, clicks, skips, and stutters then this compilation is one that might actually change your mind. If you are a fan of glitch, then this will be your compilation of the year for 2000. . Clicks_+_Cuts comp 2xcd/3xLP (Mille Plateaux/MP079) CD1 Tracks: - Frank Bretschneider: kern - SND: circa 1509 - Farben: rante - Vladislav Delay: synkopoint - Pole: heim - Pansonic: koilinen - Alva Noto: prototype.n - Skist: shift - Stillupsteypa: confused bear thrown into the sea - Neina: clairvoyance - Sutekh: unstabile - Curd Duca: pop CD2 Tracks: - Ester Brinkmann: maschine - All: uberall - Dettinger: strange fruit - Autopoieses: these few minutes - Jake Mandell: i won't lie - Kit Clayton: loads early like normal - Ultra Red: (esta gran humanidad ha dicho) ya basta! - Reinhard Voigt: matrix - Thomas Meinecke's Framus Waikiki: rechannelled from stereo - Panacea: sinecore - Ihan: sana titre n 2 - Kid 606: sonqizzmaster - Goem: comp vier Overall, a truely amazing compilation. A marvellous mix of experimental/abstract techno, electronica & ambient with a suprising amount of melody mixed it all heavily laiden with the pops, clicks & skips that defines the glitch sound. This comp features beautiful tracks from familiar glitch artists like noto, komet, snd, farben, brinkman, dettinger, goem, neina, voigt, panasonic, vladislav delay, and pole as well as impressive tracks from artists not previously known for sed style like sutekh, curd duca, kit clayton, jake mandell, kid606, and panacea. If I had to make one small complaint it would be that I would have liked to have also heard contrabutions from other glitch artists like Oval, Ryoji Ikeda, Kohn, Minit, Shuttle358, Tom Steinle, Novisad, & Cathars but even without those producers this is still a superb compilation. Fans of any of the producers on this comp or the ones i just mentioned will adore this compilation. Highly recommended. Release date: mid January 2000. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Jake Mandell is a well-known name on this list for his excellent releases on labels like Worm Interface, Lucky Kitchen, Kodema, Carpark, Pitchcadet, and his own Primedeep label. He's tackled a variety of styles on his previous releases ranging from idm to d&b to experimental ambient. Now, for Quondam Current, his first album on Force Inc., Jake adds deep techno to his portfolio. . Jake Mandell: quondam current cd/2xLP (Force Inc/FIM-1-036) Tracks: - emulsified ossature - circumscrubed - enchanted philter - tectonic shifting - jabot - happiness is a honeydip - red auscultation - knolled troll - acicular spicula - airlocked brow - chrome plaiting - rubber rock - coney island (instant brownie mix) (Supposedly the vinyl version has an exclusive remix by Stewart Walker but I have the cd version now so I cannot comment on that mix now.) Havent given this one enough listens yet to give a thorough review yet but my early opinion is that Jake's intricate programming is still pervasive but backed with deep 4x4 percussion instead of polyrhythms or hip hop beats producing a very rich deep techno sound. Imagine what a a stewart walker or maybe john tejada collaboration with Jake Mandell would be like and you'll have an idea of the sound of this one. Very good stuff. Lance, I agree with you wholeheartedly. I also have advanced copies, not on CD but vinyl versions of these releases. The CD version of Clicks and Cuts seem to have 2 tracks - Kid 606 and Goem, not on the vinyl release. Clicks and Cuts on Mille Plateaux is possibly the strongest minimal techno/electronic compilation out for a while with an amazing roster of top producers. On the Jake Mandell album, Stewart Walker's remix of Jake Mandell is more a journey of rhythmic fusion between the 2 producers, with Stewart brandishig more of his steely minimal textures to the piece. Fans of both artists should definitely check this. The official release date for these 2 titles in the US are Jan 25, 2000. I will be featuring these 2 releases on Ambient Zone (worldwide webcast) on Sunday Jan 16. Whoa there, Sorry, that timezone (CET) should read as Frankfurt time only. I'll revise the timezones in future to include London as GMT, which should read 15.00-17.00. Thanks for the pointer. :~) A_Zed --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Lance is on the mark here (I like the Tejada nod you make)...but to be sure this is a big step in a different direction for Mandell...stylistically not like the recent Carpark and Pitchcadet releases, so perhaps a cursory listen is in order before buying based on what you may (not) have heard of Mandell in the past. I say again his jazz studies/music education manifest themselves in his ability to maintain a consistent level of (melodic) excellence regardless of the style. Please don't read that as a suggestion that Mandell's music is in any way jazzy or (ack) acid jazzy, just that he has studied music (fact) and to my ears, it shows. Quondam Current is another fine release. Was a bit overwhelmed by the sheer diversity of Clicks + Cuts the first time through, so no comment, only big grins. laz --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
