It must be said that Miwon's full-length on City Centre Offices is the album of the month for January. And by extension, it is the album of the year! So far. For me. Anyway. Seriously, though. It's really good. Lots of different styles, a well rounded album. If you liked the Brother Mole EP, this is of the same quality and then some. That is all. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Ah, excellent, I bought that in Smallfish tonite, but havent made it through to that yet! I recently got a turntable sorted out, so i picked up quite a few cds, and loads on vinyl. Listening to the Markus Guentner disc two mix of The Hope Blister on 4AD, which is excellent. Really long droney electronic shoegazey blissfullness. I'll stick the Miwon on next, and then i have Pub>single, mole harness, and Chessie's new one with dntel and sutekh mixes on it.
Last month i finally moved away from using pine for email and now using Thunderbird, so i have filters setup for the IDM list, and its only then i really started seeing how little the ratio of music discussion to promotion there is here. Be good to get some good recommendations from people and just general discussions about good electronic music going on. In fact, i dont care if its about electronic music, i find it quite interesting to see what everyone else listens to besides idm.
thor Alan Lucas wrote:

Yes!!!! When I were a lad, whenever anyone got a record they liked, they'd stick some sort of micro-review on idm-l to let other people know and spread the love. These days the first you hear about it is when they sell it on ebay. I don't know why this has happened but it's really annoying - I got a lot of my favorite records after people around here recommended them. Not really IDM (although there are some glitches in there) but the Tunng album rocks, and the new EP with the Bloc Party cover rocks even more. Sileni's also fantastic on an IDM / minimal DnB crossover tip. Dave (Sorry about the threadkenstein resurrection of a rather old post.) Tunng played a free show at the Barbican in London on saturday. I'd seen em before and they were good, but not that tight. Saturday, they seem to have come a long way and were absolutely astounding live. Total crowd pleasers, but in a good way. In a somewhat similar(-ish) vein, i picked up two 7"s by Various Productions on saturday which are sounding ace. They're in a somewhat folkey acoustic electronic vein, but the backing music is much nastier, sounding somewhat Grime-like. I'm really wanting to listen to them again, but unfortunately on saturday my amplifier melted which sucks. I did manage to record the fucked up sounds the amp was making before it totally died, so it wasnt a total loss, but now i'm reduced to headphones on the laptop or my computer speakers in the kitchen until i get a new amp. D'oh, like a week after i got my turntable as well. grr! thor --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Inch-Time album, also on Static Caravan (but only available to download when I last checked their shop) is really quite nice, in a laptop folk-y kinda way, but with greater use of strings, bells, gongs and timpani. The man is a doctor by day apparently (where does he find the time you'd wonder...) The Tunng album is the bizz alright ; the Beta Band meets the Books kinda thing, I love it. The single The Maypole Song, is really really weird, and may or may not be a cover of a song from the Wicker Man movie ? Perhaps somebody could verify this... Greg Davis and Sebastian Roux's Paquet Surprise is similar to the Tim Hecker/Fennesz way with melody and noise, but is charmingly blissful. Also digging Ricardo Villalobos' new release Achso on Cadenza - he is one of a few producers whose work is truly worthy of the term "intelligent dance music". Anybody else heard any of this guy Nathan Fakes stuff ? I've only got Dinamo, released on Traum in 2005, but this too is a beautifully constructed piece of math house par excellence. He's an album due soon on Border Community that I just might have to pick up. |---------+----------------------------> | | David Sim | | | <pmxds@nottingham| | | .ac.uk> | | | | | | 06/02/2006 17:17 | | | | |---------+----------------------------> >------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | | | To: idm@hyperreal.org | | cc: | | Subject: Re: [idm] Pale Glitter | >------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|

Yep. I've heard 'Outhouse' 12", which is a trip. Takes BoC-style detuned synths for a trip on a self-consciously banging tech-house Doofdoof-fest. Tartan! Fake, surprise surprise, is said to be a big, big fan of Aphex Twin and My Bloody Valentine. Not that his own music makes that in any way blatantly obvious, at least not to my ears. What's so nice about Dinamo (as the only example of his music that I know) is that it's so obviously NOT another "progressive house record", nor another "techno record", nor another "microhouse record". Yet it could almost fit into a mix/set on all three of those levels. And yet there are others that reckon it sounds like something off of a 21st century Bytes. It's said he doesn't really like listening to all that much dance or electronic music, but that he does delight in composing it. That's definintely one way of retaining an individual and unspoilt vision. In general though I think that nowadays the best electronic/dance musicians are less afraid of taking risks and are enjoying the freedom to re-invent themselves over more and more labels and releases e.g. Villalobos. With so much product being made available to buy and with only so much of that product capable of reaping any "real" serious commercial reward, the bets are off our more underground "stars" having to remain so contrived in their vision becasue the stakes aren't being stacked so high on their getting by on just one or two high profile releases every couple of years. Thus follows greater freedom of expression, with more frequent releases of more worthwhile music.
