Fake, surprise surprise, is said to be a big, big fan of Aphex Twin and My
Bloody Valentine. Not that his own music makes that in any way blatantly
obvious, at least not to my ears. What's so nice about Dinamo (as the only
example of his music that I know) is that it's so obviously NOT another
"progressive house record", nor another "techno record", nor another
"microhouse record". Yet it could almost fit into a mix/set on all three of
those levels.
And yet there are others that reckon it sounds like something off of a 21st
century Bytes.
It's said he doesn't really like listening to all that much dance or
electronic music, but that he does delight in composing it. That's
definintely one way of retaining an individual and unspoilt vision. In
general though I think that nowadays the best electronic/dance musicians
are less afraid of taking risks and are enjoying the freedom to re-invent
themselves over more and more labels and releases e.g. Villalobos. With so
much product being made available to buy and with only so much of that
product capable of reaping any "real" serious commercial reward, the bets
are off our more underground "stars" having to remain so contrived in their
vision becasue the stakes aren't being stacked so high on their getting by
on just one or two high profile releases every couple of years.
Thus follows greater freedom of expression, with more frequent releases of
more worthwhile music. Hurray !

Amen to both of those. Had I not been paying attention before, or has
techno got really really good recently?

Yes!!!! When I were a lad, whenever anyone got a record they liked, they'd
stick some sort of micro-review on idm-l to let other people know and
spread the love. These days the first you hear about it is when they sell
it on ebay. I don't know why this has happened but it's really annoying - I
got a lot of my favorite records after people around here recommended them.
Not really IDM (although there are some glitches in there) but the Tunng
album rocks, and the new EP with the Bloc Party cover rocks even more.
Sileni's also fantastic on an IDM / minimal DnB crossover tip.
