That sounds about right, and I know more than a few people still using CD players from the early 80s that are in fine working order. I've since deleted it, but I believe the original post was looking for the lowest common denominator, a safe length to stay under such that his CDs would play in ALL antique/oddball CD players (not to mention old CD-ROM drives, PlayStations, etc.), and the answer to that question would be to stay under 74 minutes. Using 80-minute CDRs would be a mistake. I seem to remember hearing what might've been an urban legend about how the 74-minute spec was arrived at based on the length of a particular recording of a particular piece of classical music favored by one of the (Philips?) CD engineers. Or did I make that up? Yes, and it was Beethoven's Fifth, I believe. It's not an urban legend, though, it's quite true. As for my switching the details of 80 vs. 74 minutes, I used to have trouble with CD players playing 74 minute discs, before the 80 minute CDR's came out. I had believed that because burned CD's had a different technology than pressed discs that when 80 minute discs came out they had simply caught up to the CD spec. Apparently I was incorrect. I.W. Yes, I concur. My *only* method of listening to music is burning the CD's I buy onto my 12" Powerbook; And if I put on of those 3" CD's in my slot loading drive! HA! Goodbye Powerbook! They do make those "Fan" CD's though. Basically a 3" CD with a 2" ring of clear plastic surrounding it. Thus making it playable in slot loading drives. They also make little plastic rings that you can secure around the 3" CD, therby allowing for play in slot-loading players. I have one that came with my "Are we not men who live and die" 3" CD by Cylob. Certainly, the music is the focus of a release, but packaging and presentation can set the stage for the listener experience. Raster-Noton does a fantastic job of packaging their releases. Just seeing the way they present the music makes me want to hear more of it. I have a few of the POST series, and I want to hear the rest. I have some of the Static series, and I'd love to hear the rest. With Raster-Noton, the packaging and the music work together flawlessly. I'm always interested to see how a certain artist will interpret the idea behind the series for which they're creating that particular music. Yes, the music is the point, but I sure do appreciate when someone makes an effort to present it in interesting and/or exciting ways (see also Ae + Hafler Trio, or any other Hafler stuff, for that matter). I disagree - the point is what is presented to the listener. While this obviously includes the music, I don't think anyone would dispute that, it also includes how the music is presented. sorry, they're duplicated cd-r releases (as opposed to pressed/manufactured cds) but with the ability to have duplicated discs printed these days and the fact that they're housed in little rubber/plastic mini-dvd style cases they do look {and sound} very nice! there are a few labels taking this route now - most notably cactus island, who do editions of just 100 copies no matter who's on the disc, and quinoline yellow recently released his own limited 3" cd-r release via his website (i.e. not on skam), which is a fine disc. john
