The department has just decided to give me a computer on my desk, and as a bonus it comes with working sound. So... can anyone recommend some reasonable headphones suitable for use in an office environment - in particular, ones with very low levels of escaping noise (so as not to annoy my officemates) and preferably not requiring any sort of preamp. Thanks David -- "And then what do they do?" "Er, quadratic equations mostly, sir. Fiendishly difficult ones by all accounts." Beyerdynamic DT231. Not too big and bulky. Not very expensive and sound good. Ideally suited for your needs, I would say. The model number escapes me at the moment but Sony makes a great pair of earbuds for around $40 that are not themselves noise cancelling, but have the effect of really silencing anything around you even at a very moderate volume. It's also pretty difficult to hear them from more than a couple feet away, and they're white (kind of like the iPod headphones, but better). -- jr

If you want a high end earbud, Ive been listening with Etymotic 6i http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/er6i.aspx These are white, matching ipod look and feel, with rubber flange endings. Go to ipodlounge.com for more reviews and recommendations. And, yes, Ive had these for a year and enjoy their precise sound and clear audio. Great for hi fidelity, but could be lacking in bass... if hyperbass is reeeely important to you wnf __________________________________ Yahoo! Yeah, I think high end little headphones are more what I was after than the 'proper' cans that were being recommended. My hi-fi housemate recommended Sennheiser's in ear one, although I've yet to look at that. By the way, noise cancelling is less important to me than low escapage, since when I say office, I'm thinking of a room full of people doing maths; 'library' would probably be a better description of the atmosphere than 'office'!
