pop is such a relative term. to people who are used to "out" shit, 'amber' is poppy if not actually pop. it's composed of short songs that build in fairly logical ways, has nice catchy melodies and pleasant sounds, with relatively simple beats. but it lacks the final components that IMO make it truly pop music. d. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I spoke too rashly. I used the term "pop" but not as an insult (it's not an insult to me). I merely meant it was more approachable, more melodic than their later material. That's all folks. m*

If I put on my electronic-music-grad-student hat, all IDM is pop music. It's created in the commercial arena, and combines variations on popular rhythms with computer music techniques created in academia thirty years ago. If I take a more common-sense viewpoint, it's pretty clear to me that pop-ness is a continuum with Britney on one end and Xenakis on the other, and there's not much point in drawing a line somewhere and saying everything to one side is pop and everything else isn't--especially because how poppy something is has a very weak relationship to how good it is. Personally I'd rather listen to good pop music than bad art music, and vice versa. The first Autechre track I ever heard was "Gantz graf", and everything I've heard by them since has been pretty good, but a little bland compared to that. Maybe CONFIELD is what I need. -- THE DOUBTFUL PALACE Free exquisite music http://www.doubtfulpalace.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Agreed! Though more likely than fall to the floor laughing they'd get a fit of the wiggles. Funny how in that 'IDM' death-thread from earlier i never saw anybody propose that {GOOD music} in their list of terms. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Sometimes I think there should be only four electronic music genres: "the thumpy shit," "the twitchy shit," "the swirly shit," and "the noisy shit." You could, of course, combine them: "the thumpy-noisy shit," etc. At least we'd be less likely to see people trying to claim every piece of good music ever made for their subgenre, like what's-his-name does in THE AMBIENT CENTURY. -- THE DOUBTFUL PALACE Free exquisite music http://www.doubtfulpalace.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Given the insane breadth of what might be considered the IDM genre, yeah, IDM is totally pop. I mean, Styrofoam is completely pop. And yet he still probably can fit under the "IDM" umbrella. Plenty of Aphex stuff is poppy. Tons of Plaid stuff is pop. Morr and CCO are full of pop. Which brings us back to why IDM isn't really a genre, it's a mailing list.
