hell yeah. these guys played in Iowa City Saturday night and it was amazing. Aaron's set was a combination of ragga samples with insane beats mashed together live, and Society Suckers was pure hardcore insanity, but musically interesting too. Christian (society suckers) is a friendly, pleasant guy, who had bruises all over his forehead from banging his head on the table during his Detroit set. His Iowa City set involved people swinging from the rafters, chairs and bottles getting thrown, the DJ table getting pushed off the stage, and guy on guy dry humping. I never did find the microphone when I was taking down the sound -- one of the promoters threw it somewhere. After a few drinks Christian kept talking about wanting to kill everyone, and at the afterparty he told a cute girl "I would kill anyone for you, just as long as you show proper appreciation." I think she showed him proper appreciation, without the need for any homicide. Best pickup line ever. On Mon, 13 Dec 2004 00:31:00 -0500, cutups <cutup@andythepooh.com> wrote:

Is this some sort of post-ironic act like Hearts of Darknesses? So is it that they suck but they're crazy, or what? -- The best show killed by Cartoon Network/Adult Swim: Home Movies. Season 1, Out on DVD - November 16th. http://homemovies.toonzone.net/DVD.html (Entertainment Weekly endorsed it after it was canceled - what does that tell you?) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

If you have any appreciation of the hardcore/noise-breaks genre, Society Suckers are in fact really good, and other than using really fast tempos and distorted beats, it's pretty original stuff. Kind of like a Speedranch/Rich Devine mashup. And the show is unpredictable and crazy. Christian is a sweet guy but he's like Andy Kaufman weird, especially once he's had ein paar schnapps. I mean he came, he played, everyone there had a mad good time. Can't ask for more than that. On Mon, 13 Dec 2004 20:55:40 -0600, Andrew Hime <hime@charter.net> wrote:

I don't know about y'all, but I'm getting really really tired of the whole ragga dancehall sound with raggae man vocal samples infiltrating its way into hardcore breackbeat stuff. Hopefully it'll be as short lived as the whole electroclash thing.

i don't think mixing ragga with hardcore is a new thing by any means, but it's all in how well you do it. people went mad for what aaron spectre did, and i had a blast with it, even though I probably wouldn't go out and buy a bunch of records in that style. Maybe I'm missing something here, but this sound is nothing new. Granted, it's back again sort of like electroclash... some of us into old school hardcore don't mind at all. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Either that or people will start doing ragga dancehall with 80's electropop samples.[1] Tbh, it's just like any other IDM subgenre[2], in that there are really good people doing interesting, enjoyable music and a lot of less good people doing rather uninspired knockoffs until everyone gets sick of it. David [1] Cow'p springs to mind. Its definitely not new, but its been a huge trend for the past several years amoung a number of producers in "breakcore" (ex: Bong-Ra, Enduser, etc.) and there's been a pretty big surge in the ragga jungle scene in general. It's definitely one of the more popular sounds. I guess its an easy way to hook people into the more crazy percussion styles because they fall for the samples. It is kind of an overdone sound at this point. But if you just take it for what it is, its still quite fun. - cutups --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I think there's a question of intention as well. There are people who hear one track and then search for Cutty Ranks on soulseek, and it's pretty bald appropriation, and used with no small condescension to the original material. Aaron Spectre, from the sound of it, and the few words I had with him, is a huge fan of ragga jungle and reggae. His set started from ragga, and pumped it up past eleven. It was exhilarating, crazy, awesome, fun, seizure-inducing music. He was not using a few vocal samples as hip references to put his arbitrary glitch-step beats over. I've always been a reggae fan as much as I am an IDM fan (or a techno fan, or a house music fan, or a jazz fan ...) so for me it was a pitch right over the plate, as it were. Your mileage may vary. The problem with EVERY musical genre is that we never seem to finally defeat the sucker MCs. Beethoven had to sweat 'em too. On Mon, 13 Dec 2004 12:50:44 -0500, cutups <cutup@andythepooh.com> wrote:
