P.S. An acquaintance of mine had an amusing story of Boulez getting
locked into the rare book room (which is airtight) at the Schoenberg
Archiv in Switzerland. Apparently, he was nonplussed.
P.P.S. While we're listing musique concrete and avant-classical
composers, it's probably worth mentioning Steve Reich. He's not as
wild as Cage and not as austere as La Monte Young, but he's also the
most accessible. "It's Gonna Rain", "Come Out", "Two Pianos" and
"Drumming" are all amazing.
