hi everyone... apologies in advance if this seems like a dumb question what's the best way to digitally mix tracks? is there a stand alone unit you can buy to do it (other than cd mixer) or, if the best way is on a computer what's the best software to use? thanks! there may be some confusion about what you mean by mixing. i think what you need really depends on what you're trying to do. while it's true that *ideally* your tools should be flexible, whether it's hardware boxes or computer software, the truth is people like to work differently, and different kinds of music are easier to do on different platforms. d. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Okay, listen to this- when I make a mix, I turn all of the relevant mp3's into wave files. I tap out the BPM on a freeware counter then I use Goldwave to quite crudely pitch adjust. Since the pitch adjust usually sucks, I isolate one drum loop from the next song, paste-mix to the previous song, and that minimizes the "trainwreck" effect when BPM's go out the window. Use Nero to take out the 2 second pause when burning to disc and BAM- a continuous mix hotter than Oakenfold. You talk about cheap! Sure, it takes me a month to make one mix and is about as fun as mowing the lawn with scissors, but it does the job. Basically, if you have a computer and a shitload of free time, you could do a reasonable mix using freeware only. Counts __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Hey John Hilarious mail! I have a vision of you crawling around the garden with scissors... On to the music : in that case, you should import all your waves to a multi-wave editor like Cubase or Cool Edit Pro (I found ProTools too cumbersome on a PC) and bounce down your final mix as one long (60- min, or whatever) wave. You can later index it to work like a 'bought' mix CD so that you can access each track on a stand-alone player. Wave editors come with a few pre-sets and you can install a bunch of powerful plug-ins, so you can really produce a slick sounding end result. I * On 5 Mar 2004 at 9:21, John Counts wrote:

first off i want to thank you and congratulate you for buying the CDs instead of just downloading mp3s free. i'm not sure what's out there for what you're talking about, but i'd think you can just bring a laptop and hook it into the mixer to play mp3s off that when you need to. of course, if you don't have some internal mixing software, this creates the problem of having to always follow an mp3 with vinyl or CD. there are loads of programs that allow you to just have multiple tracks and pull in wav files, but those aren't very DJ-friendly. i'd think there must be something out there by now that addresses this issue, like creating a virtual DJ mixer that can pull in mp3s and preview them to a separate headphone output, with faders that you move with a mouse or can be controlled with a small outboard digital mixer for a more intuitive feel. anyone know if anything like this exists? d. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Traktor is one of the better software for computer mixing; you still need a soundcard with multiple out to be able to "preview". --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

There is a PCMCIA card from Echo (one of the indigo cards) that has two stereo outputs - I assume you could attach each of these to the line in of a DJ mixer and cue as you would normally. Then (of course) all you need are a couple of instances of a 'varispeed' mp3 player. Some of the newer DJ CD Players now allow MP3's. You could use those and just mix into it regularly. Also, if your ripping them to MP3, ever consider Final Scratch? I've heard amaing things about that. ----- Original Message ----- From: "chthonic streams" <chthonic@chthonicstreams.com>

There are soundcards that give you multiple outs and you can route different tracks to different outs, so that you can mix them with a dj mixer. There's also programs like traktor that let you mix on the machine, or (i believe) you can send each track on a seperate out. Alot of people seem to like the various cd mixers out there. There are a few different controller kind of things out there...i don't use any of them yet, but i'd like to once i find the right one for the right price. I posted about this thing several months back, The Hercules DJ Console. It looks pretty cool: http://www6.tomshardware.com/video/20031111/ But i haven't met anybody who has used it yet. - cutups --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

http://www.atomixmp3.com I have been using this for gigs since 2000 and still prefer it to any of the more complex wares out there like Traktor. (In fact I had a gig in downtown LA last night mixing up IDM glitch techno dub stuff.) I still use version 1.12, leaner and more stable than its successors. All you can do in Atomix is cue up tracks, beatsync them, adjust the speed/pitch, and nudge the track position. You can also needle drop at any point which is quite handy. I run two copies of Atomix at once, I can do four tracks simultaneously, two out each of my two USB soundcards, and mix on an external DJ mixer (which is essential, don't try to mix your set with a mouse for God's sake). Has anyone used Ableton Live for mixing? I'm a drummer/interpreted of electronic beats, not a DJ, but I thought it might be fun to use it to mix in non-professional situations. But it seems like a 45 minute set would create quite a bit of latency. The Digi 002 Rack is my sound card. Sure, it takes me a month to make one mix and is about as fun as mowing the lawn with scissors, but it does the job. Basically, if you have a computer and a shitload of free time, you could do a reasonable mix using freeware only. oh no, I don't perform! :) I live in springifield,MO. which is about as un-IDM/dance/etc. as it gets. These mixes are for my own pleasure. If you get comfortable with preparing audio files with Ableton live, you can do it all in an evening. Or use Acid Pro, whose beat matcher works if you're willing to drill down to sample accuracy to set the file tempo and downbeat. I used the latter method with the 2002 mix at: http://www.psychiatry.uiowa.edu/~kent/chaircrusher/ I have a whole bunch of disco and early house records I want to mix in Ableton. Sure there's not the same spontenaity as working with turntables -- or CDs with pitch control. I find that it's quite easy to mix with the DENON DN 2000 which is quite old. I find the downbeat and then recue and pitch the new track until it's tight and then drop it in. You don't have to refind the cue-point each time the way you do with vinyl. Has anyone heard of the new final scratch-like setup from Rane and Serato? NI's Traktor is the best solution for mixing (just like the first responder said). I use it with an Oxygen8 to control it externally - there's no need for an external mixer - it would be just another piece of gear to lug to your gig. Almost every function I need to perform I can using 26 keys + 10 knobs. In this way the mixing becomes a physical act just like using vinyl. Not "just" but close enough and unique in its own right too. seriously, as someone who has bought records for years and had turtables, fx, and mixers galore, Traktor has made all that gear and physicality obsolete. The only distinct difference is that my fiance concedes I'm not as sexy (her word) to watch sitting infront of my PC, mouse and keyboard in hand as I am with my record box by my side standing over 2 techs and a mixer. The moral is, if you only care about the art, don't bother with turntables. But if you'd like a phone number or a smooch, stick with shlepping records from gig to gig. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

This from yesterdays NTK [ http://www.ntk.net ] ... Not checked it out myself yet but figured it was worth posting: >> TRACKING << sufficiently advanced technology : the gathering "Oh, to be a top DJ again," writes YOZ GRAHAME, rather over- romanticising the three housewarming parties he's played in the last five years. "But now that I'm all MP3ed-up, it'd be nice to use mixing software that brought back the joy of vinyl without spending half a grand on Final Scratch. I've had my eye on the HERCULES DJ CONSOLE but until payday I've got TACTILE 12000 (Windows and OSX), possibly the only Sourceforge project written in Macromedia Director. None of that fancy auto-BPM-detection here; instead you get big spinning discs, draggable needles, nudge buttons, splittable- stereo cueing (along with multiple sound outputs) and hotkeys for everything. Admittedly the scratching's a bit crap and the whole thing's rather more Fisher-Price than Fischerspooner, but it's good enough to get me started on my efforts to mix 'Yellow Submarine' with Weezer's 'Green Album' - roll on, Lime Wednesday!" http://www.tactile12000.com/ - style and substance locked in mortal soundclash http://sourceforge.net/projects/tactile12000/ - a great start for both of you Lingo OSS coders out there http://www.hothardware.com/hh_files/S&V/djconsole.shtml - unlike FS, actually looks like it justifies the price http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/ - bonus tracking: yet another (Windows-optimised) VNC on 05.03.2004 23.48 the person going by the name Gil Yaker at gyaker@nomusic.net spake :

Has anyone seen the hercules mp3 mixing console. Its a usb device thats got 2 jog wheels on (like cd decks) and all the mixer functions (ie. eq, crossfader,etc..). Its looks stunnin bout half the size of a laptop if not smaller. i tried one out and thought yeh, put my turntables and hefty record boxes away and take the laptop and this baby with me next time. i was lookin at final scratch but this is a third of the price. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
