hey everyone... does anyone know much about 'loess'...? reason i ask is i tracked down down '3d concepts pt 2' 12 on toytronic which is *amazing* and i've just got hold of of the s/t album which really has got some of the most emotional tracks i've ever heard; in partiular 'alluvium edit' is just heart-breaking, reminds me of some aphex tracks on 'selected ambient works vol 2'. they've got such a distinct sound, something that really just catches you. any recommendations along these lines...? The last two are exactly how I'd describe the new Proem album on m3rck "Socially Inept".. I ordered this and Secede's "bye bye gridlock traffic" and the sweet-ass Proem t-shirt..received it all in a couple of days along with a huge batch of stickers and flyers (yes...merck rocks) I'm still digesting "Socially Inept", it's obvious it took a lot of time and concentration to make and I'm amazed at how he fit this much MUSIC into 60 minutes. Some highlights so far, the vocals on "carpark kittens" and *gasp* is that an electric guitar on "deep like airline failure"? The outro of the last track "socially inept" is one of the more thrilling ambient rides in memory. So... yeah. I've only ordered from merck a few times, but I've always gotten *excellent* service from them. they do indeed rock when it comes to mailorder. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I ordered 'Socially Inept' and Proswell's 'Carrot Dossier'. I *wanted* to order them direct from the label, but the prices aren't any better than Forced Exposure. Merck charges $4 to ship one or two CDs, while FE charges a flat fee of $4.50 per order (any size). Merck offers discounts on orders of three or more CDs, but isn't $17.50 a bit ridiculous for one CD, direct from the label? Look at Kranky Records; they charge $11 per CD, and that includes shipping within the USA. Their artwork/packaging is just as elegant, and they include stickers, etc. just like Merck. Yes, I'm a tightwad. But this was not the first time I've wanted to buy less than three CDs from Merck. It sucks having to wait until I can afford a larger order (from PJ or FE) to hear the latest Merck release. phase np: Greg Davis - Arbor --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

here's an answer from gabe@merck: "we set our prices to match our distributor prices so that we dont undercut our partners in business. Merck shipping is a flat $4.00 as well, its just that when you order more than 2 cds, we also reduce the price of each cd as well. So you really arent losing anything by ordering from us." .. the few extra bucks that don't go to the distributor/outlet go towards keeping the label running and releasing music you just might like, so i wouldn't call it unfair. juho On Fri, 6 Feb 2004 phase@booyaka.com wrote:

I agree with all of this 100%. Socially Inept is an excellent album, and shows a lot of growth. Eric's right - there is a whole lot packed into this album. I made the mistake of listening to this on crappy computer speakers the first time (I got it at work and couldn't wait). It's deceptively simple at first, but there are a lot of details and elegant touches throughout. It seems a labour of love. It's like a friend you haven't seen in years creeping up behind you and whispering sweet memories and good news in your ear. It's like sweet organic honey with graham cracker bits... He's played with vocals a bit more - I hear them on 4 tracks, but they're buried and made a part of the music on two of them. The beautiful, sighing electric guitar on Deep Like Airline Failure is a wonderful surprise. Please, Mr. Proem man, may I have another? -Adam Piontek --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Chances are Kranky sells more of their product and has some type of business mail deal. I'd just special order the CD through your local cd shop. a decent indie shop can probably order the CD from F.E. or Massive and get it along with their usual order. EAR/Rational sells Merck CDs for $13.25, and shipping for 1 CD is $1.50, for a total of $14.75 for 1 CD. Shipping for 2 CDs is $2.50.

Yes, but retailers can't compete when labels do that. Merck's response was correct--they have to charge a price which is commensurate with what a retailer would charge after buying wholesale, otherwise they're undercutting the retailers who are carrying their product. $11 is roughly the wholesale price we pay for kranky CDs, PLUS the shipping costs to get that CD to us, PLUS the cost for us to ship it to you. So if we matched kranky's out the door price, we'd be breaking even or losing a little. You can't have it both ways (and I don't mean Greg, specifically). If you want to get CDs cheap from the label, that's great. But you can't expect your favorite retailer to be able to compete with those prices. And when people ask why we're charging "so much" for this label or that label when they can buy it cheaper directly, we end up sounding like whiners.
