I'm shocked actually that it's taken them *this* long to up the quality of their MP3s from 128k to 192k VBR but Im not sure when this happened. I imagine it was only in the past few months. Im curious - have any of you noticed a substantial increase in sound quality? Is it worth becoming a subscriber again ? Anything else new and improved with their service in the past 2 years? I subscribed when it first came out and spent about a month downloading every single track from the "electronic" category - many of which I notice are no longer available FYI - They are using LAME 3.92 -alt-preset standard for encoding Emusic VBR FAQ is here: http://help.emusic.com/help/emvbr/ Shimone/Justes http://www.staticbeats.com > Electronic Music > Digital Culture http://www.boomboombap.com > First Come > First Heard

there is not bitrate for VBR (by definition, it's variable!) but --alt-preset standard will give higher bitrates than 192k on average, probably closer to 200-210k. sounds SO much better though, a lot better than 192k CBR. david At 11:45 05/09/2003 -0700, StaticBeats wrote:

this seems to contradict the rest of the information in that section, and seems to be an oversimplification. emusic uses --alt-preset standard (which is VBR, not ABR) - quite an informed choice, definitely the best for cd-quality encoding. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
