I think, far more than John Cage, the piano bits are very reminiscent of Erik Satie. Not just the obvious Gymnopedies & Gnostiennes, but also his other piano works, ALL of which are worth hunting down! cant remember what it's called. He used a Grand piano which is midi controlled dont know if that was in the article or what, i read it a while back. anyway, didn't afx sequence the piano tracks using midi? i thought that by unplayable it meant that one person couldn't play the piece, because there's loads of separate parts going on. correct me if i'm wrong on this, not that it matters.

From what I've read about that tracks (enclosed artical and afx interviews your correct in your assumption..the "unplayable" is in quotes because in one of the interviews it's how he reffered to them..and yes they were sequenced on a computer but triggered by a disclavier which is a real piano that's hammers can be triggered using midi signals...so the sound was in effect recorded live and not sequenced post sampling..that's what I was trying to say earlier...hope I helped. It doesn't really change things to know I just like knowing. Pats

Has anyone heard any of the works of Conlon Nancarrow? His works for player piano (you know the pianos with drums of music on metal tape, sometimes called pianolas) are fantastic, often reminiscent of Autechre's rhythms on Confield, some really great stuff. For interested people you can hear a sample here: http://motion.state51.co.uk/reviews/495.html or http://news.mpr.org/features/199710/29_bakera_nancarrow/ Very, very interesting and not in a Stockhausen unlistenable way either. Genuinely pleasant too. But as aforementioned Satie is the closest to the Drukqs piano tracks. cheerio george --- It bleeps. It skronks. Thanks for the link! It's posts like this that make wading through all of the advertisements and discussions of 'most idm xxx' worth it. I'd never heard of this composer, but I listened to the tracks and they sound very cool. I did some searching and found Nancarrow's five volume prepared piano set here: http://www.forcedexposure.com/labels/wergo.germany.html Looks like they also had the works for prepared piano cds that were being discussed earlier on the same page. Well, I'm going to contradict myself but I can't help participating in this one :) Traci Lords (70s/80s porn star) had a short stint as a techno artist, Juno Reactor worked with her on a few tracks.
