meat beat manifesto wow, a whole debate springs up about my favoritest ever band and i miss it cos our mail system is so wanky. Someone (tamara?) asked if the beat on Helter Skelter was original. Sure was. There's an article in Volume One about MBM which claims that Jack spent 2000 quid on studio time recording the drum samples that he used on that track and a mere 300 pounds on the actual session that produced the Helter Skelter single. Sounds about right to me. For the record (arf arf), i don't think "circles" ever came out as a real single release - there were some promos but that was about the extent of it. now as for this comment about storm the studio... <<It's good and all, but fully realized? It's one of the most unfocused, scattered albums I have. "Hey, Johnny, the masters are all burnt! What now?">> much as it pains me to disagree with Chris Hilker about anything, i have to take exception to this flagrant misrepresentation. Storm The Studio *is* one of the most perfect, coherent, wonderful records ever made. Definitely on my all time top 10 list, and has been since the day it came out. The more I listen to it, the more I like it. Even today with all the advances in IDM, it still stands up. Even better in fact. Scattered and unfocused? No way! I can't prove it in writing, obviously, but just trust me on this one. I'll see if I can log into my bolthole account and post the latest version of my MBM discography to the list. It does get kind of sloppy towards the end since my interest in the group has waned since Satyricon came out. Do check out Jack's mix of "Butterfly Wings" by Machines Of Loving Grace though. I have Satyricon, and I freakin' love it, but 99% isn't really my cup of tea. When was STS released? After Satyricon? I must get me feeelthy mits on this one! -boB

Dog Star Man and the astonishing 99%. I think Mr. Dangers started to be a tad derivative around Subliminal Sandwich... just my 2cent DS

I think Mr. Dangers started to be a tad derivative around Subliminal Sandwich... just my 2cent I don't think he's as much derivitive as he is just kicking his dead horse at this point. Those are some some really original sounds on Subliminal Sandwich and on Actual Sounds and Voices (my fave, too), but he seems to be falling into this rut of- acoustic drums with a dubby synth bass line with some squirrely squeaky synth sounds on top, and some occasional guitar parts. It's not a bad combination. He's just done it so many times now that I don't really care to hear it again. I would love to hear him do some things in a slightly more electronic direction like the Original Fire cd. Also the dub mix of Prime Adio Soup is one of my faves too. I haven't heard anything from the new album yet, but I am still a fan, so I'll be picking it up.

I think 'RUOK?' won't convince anyone who thinks MBM is in a rut to think otherwise. But I really think that even if there's a formula to what he does, it's his formula and the new CD refines and deepens it. Every track is fractally detailed with hundreds of little bits of sound design that appear only once. Even though he throws more at a track than a lot of producers might use for a whole album, there is still space in the music. The production values on it are amazing, as well. The bass is deep and wide. The modular synth sounds are better recorded and mixed than I've ever heard before. It's the first record I've heard that approaches the sound I've heard when I patch up a Putney or Serge modular and listen to it direct through good speakers. And the beats are so big they make Big Beat sound like My First Sony. If you're into the whole broken-beat thing going on now, there are several tracks that would absolutely make a DJ set on this record. But keep in mind that he was doing this sort of thing years ago, and the broken beat guys are just now catching on. On Thu, 12 Sep 2002, Albers, Brian wrote:

I agree that the first three albums ('STS', 'Armed Audio Warfare' and '99%' --'Dog Star Man' was a single) but if you try to ease people into the "old(er)" MBM sound, it's not as easy due to the tougher angle they had back in the day (choreographed videos & concerts w/ dancers, spikes, and the whole lot!). I have a nice feature/review lined up for the new 'RUOK' full-length that relies on more of the percussive based and bassline enriched side of Dangers' magnetic rhythms. It has less of a focus on sampling and lyrical content but is sure to please avid MBM fans and even new listeners having just discovered them. Igloo Mag will also feature a full interview with Jack within a month or so. I heard an album reciently with an altered speak and spell on teh cover, it was considerably better and there was a breakbeat track about 1/2 way through that was really impressive. His electro-acoutsic/tape music album was also good- but was an obvious homage to the originators of the movement rather than an origional statement. In this release you can definitely see Jack moving more into the abstract electronic field while still retaining the classic MBM feeling. I also have to add that for those of you who are expecting to hear the "typical" MBM beats and bass will be in for a surprise.
