Does anyone out here know how that effect was done? thank you sys _________________________________________________________________ Join the world?s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

He beats his cock against a frying pan. Richard James has a metal, electrified cock. He's "special". --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Dragged the wretched album out again and tried to see if there was something I missed. Nope. Try timestretching. It seems to be popular with the kids nowadays. Then resample the timestretched bits and stick that in your software. Cut out one beat of the timestretched sample that sounds really noisy and discordant and assign a loop point fairly close to the beginning so that the loop oscillates at the top of your singing range. Pitchbend at will, combine with other similarly concocted samples in a completely un-funky disjointed rhythm. Now you can sound like somebody else. Congratulations. Or B, my method. Play Analog BD 1, CR Cymbal 1, Ride 1 and Analog Snare 2 all at once through amp sim. Sample. Tune loop length of sample to desired freq and pitchbend at will. Feel like an idiot for wasting five minutes of valuable Sunday afternoon. 'Sickest fucking 20 seconds' should be an album title Tom --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

my guess would be a some kind of overdrive or distortion over some cut up drum sounds or perhapse ptched samples of someone beating cans with sticks...it doesnt seem like brain surgery to me, although some of the simplest techniques have been used to create scores of albums. lets face it, without the "power chord" the grunge years would have never existed (for better or worse). mike (tangible) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Thomas Millar" <tmillar@comcast.net> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Sunday, August 25, 2002 3:31 PM Subject: Re: [idm] 54 cymru beats end effects

clarification for the sake of those unfamiliar with guitars and such: 'Power Chords' aren't really chords, it's just a root and fifth. On a solidbody electric (like most guitars) with distortion the harmonics get jumped up enough to create the illusion of a fourth (fifth of the fifth) and thus it sounds almost like three notes (standard def. of a chord) even though it's not. Punk rock was born, raised, and has progressed into tired midlife with very little beyond this handy two-finger salute. 'Power Chords' in this sense have been around since electrics and amps became the norm. Most jazz guitarists, however, prefer to use an octave interval since they're going for clarity, not density. On a related note, the twelve-bar blues progression is still the number one chord framework for all popular music in the western world. The prevailing IDM chord structure is even simpler. Break down 95% of techno or IDM and all you find is an ostinato of two minor chords. Most of the evocative melodies we rave about incessantly on IDML are just variations on Philip Glass, the grandaddy of piano for butterfingers. None of this is meant to deny any music its individual expressive qualities. I'm not discussing expression or 'soul' at all (James Brown's music is so modal it's barely even blues). I just like to point out that there are no magic techniques involved- good music, no matter the genre, is straight from the performer's gut to the listener's ear. Hence some people loving drukqs so much they almost get in traffic accidents while others, including myself, find more entertainment in a running dishwasher. Tom P.S. For those who haven't checked it out, 'V/VM Help Aphex Twin' is a high quality pair of 3" CDs. All your favorites, treated like those parts of the cow they use to make hot dogs. Personally I'd like to see V/VM hook up with Rhino Records and remix the entire catalogue for a box set. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
