Yo, I'm trying to get into dancehall ragga stuff, but finding it a liitle hard to know where to start. Following on from some of the Timbaland sounds, the 'Now Thing' compilation on Mo'Wax got me hooked, and I've got to have more of those stuttering beats and weird, minimal acid lines. Although that album was all instrumental, I've heard a few vocal 'tings that were great too - 'Jailbrake' by Sizzla was one. Basically, if anybody knew of a few more compilations that would help me find my feet in the scene, that would be great. Also, classic albums that I could check. Nothing too melody-based, just raw and minimal like I said. Lastly (before the shirt off anyone's back), scene websites would be nice too. Come to think of it, if someone could just buy me a house in Kingston, that would probably sort out thew whole darn problem. Awaitng missives, Papa D. recently it's stuff cut on the Dewali & Famine rhythms that have been rocking my world (Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Cecile, Sizzla, Elephant Man, etc...). The Dewali cuts are probably close to what you're looking for. It's a danceable rhythm but really odd & rough sounding. If you don't want to chase down the 7"s, Greensleeves does a good job of compiling stuff cut on the same rhythms for good extended mix potential. www.jammyland.com is a good source for buying fresh new dancehall sounds. hmmm haven't heard Famine yet but... Diwali!!! I just picked up the Diwali Riddim LP on Greensleeves and am making my way through it. Some insane stuff on there esp Elephant Man's version. Shiza my nizza indeed. I picked mine up at a store here in NYC but if you go to: http://www.turntablelab.com/labindub/labindub1.html and scroll to the bottom you'll find RealAudio clips off the album. Actually, just go to the turntablelab homepage and navigate yer way to the reggae section. They've got like 2 pages worth of Dancehall stuff w/informative reviews and RA clips.

First time I heard dwali was april 2002 when I bought the Assasin,TOK, and Desparado versions at Aquarius records in Kingston... on 45 of course... but now I want the whole lp!!!! even though it isn't a typical dancehall beat (more slow house) but it is still considered dancehall cause of the artists, etc. -Joel Howard Shih wrote:On Tue, 20 Aug 2002, Jeff/Ninja Tune wrote:

Good names below ;) also the style you were referring to reminds me of late 90's dancehall... more subtle with the acid sounds and stuff... alot of stuff now is changing fast and becoming more complicated in texture/nature. Yet it is still solid maybe even more solid than its predecessors. I would like to add some names if I may: CAPLETON ward21 frisco kid mega banton buju banton warrior king Ricky Rudy (aka Bling Dawg) ELEPHANT MAN -Joel "..chris griffin??" wrote: i haven`t heard the stuffed you mentioned, but here are some artists you should check out if you want some good hardcore-dancehall: -sizzla -ward 21 -lexxus -tok -bounty killer -alozade -spragga benz ..chris?? yo joel, thanks for the tips, I gotta get back down to my spots, theres a whole bunch of new riddims I need to cop, including Diwali which I only have on mixtape (federation clique out of Philly, highly reccomended, has an excellent Sean Paul exclusive beef track). hhmm the diwali-riddim sure is nice, but i think there are better (and more dancehall-typical) riddims that rock! - problem-riddim - liquid-riddim - lightning-riddim - streetsweeper-riddim - superstar-riddim - rice and peas-riddim most of the riddims are available on one-riddim-cds either at greensleeves or vp records. ..chris°° ..
