You may get sick of discussing Warp-related stuff here, however... I listen to tons of music. A lot of that is no-name IDM that really sounds too much alike -- Autechre knock-offs, so to speak. It's all good stuff, certainly. But I won't remember any of it 15 minutes later. (For example, someone recommended E*Vax. I found it and listened. It was very cool. Can't recall a damn note.) Today I listened to Prefuse 73's "92 vs 02." I listened a bunch of times and actually found myself humming one of the tracks while working. I almost NEVER do this with no-name IDM because I don't remember any of it. Just when I think Warp is starting to lose their edge, they release stuff like this. Then I remember why it is I started devouring Warp music in the first place. So as tired as you may get of the same old discussions, I don't think they're unwarranted. forcasa __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! I agree.. A lot of what I've heard in demo's and promo's from people - it all sounds like people are wannabes... 'I'm the next AE because I use similar processed noises.....' People should ignore what is current and create new sounds... we have the technology ($6m dollar bloke) so why not be inventive? In ambient music, the complexity of sounds is creating new sonic possibilities, so why not IDM? I think alot of people sound like autechre because its just the kind of thing you can come upon by noodling about with current software. I know a couple people who know nothing about autechre or the "IDM" scene who come up with stuff that you could call autechre clones (not developed, but similiar kinds of sounds/structures). I think the key is just support what you like. There's always going to be producers who are going to retread the same territory...its not like everything can break into new areas. - cutups ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard" <arkive@btopenworld.com> To: "Jonathan Osborne" <forcasa@yahoo.com>; "IDM" <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Tuesday, July 30, 2002 5:02 PM Subject: Re: [idm] Warp talk

Hell, the main reason why i did recommend E*Vax is because it slips from the regular trend you all seem to talk about. This "everyone is trying to mimic AE" thing. So, please, can't people just stop whining about others following a style? I mean if AE's style was the way i could express myself musically (fortunately, it aint), i WOULD do things the AE way. And i do advise everybody to do the same, when possible. Who cares if others did it already? As long as you can express yourself the way YOU want it, its all good. Am i that wrong? Calling people wannabes is basically telling them the way they choose to express what they feel, SUCKS. And whoever says that, never did music themselves. Remember boc's quote where they said something similar to: "we're glad people use us as inspiration. at least it means we did something that changed them inside". This is exactly how i feel. Lets cut the god damn AE-alike-number-XXXX crap, shall we? I guess what pisses me off the most is when people tell other people what to talk about and what NOT to talk about. An angry army of 5,000 Autechre clones can't measure up to that shit. forcasa __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! tell me something. did you read my post, or are you just trolling on one specific sentence because it makes you feel like god, for a couple of miliseconds? go back, read it, come back, and see how much of a fool you can be. did i tell you not to talk about anything? i said its stupid that people call just-about-anything an autechre clone. if you didn't get it, please, stay away, you... you... sarcastic bitter geek Frederico Oliveira Enough Records // enoughrecords.com_ Stylevictim // stylevictim.com_ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I would be most certainly guilty of pleading for non-warp talk, and the reasons why are twofold: 1. most of the comments are about their older back cateloge, like artificial intelligence, or RDJ album. Sure it's relevant but it's not exactly exciting. Why not discuss Prefuse or Vincent Gallo, or even Anti-pop? At least they would all count as recient releases... 2. There are so many great people out there doing fantastic music- music you can hum, and sing, and dance, and think about, and destroy stuff to - that's it's simply just in bad taste. How many posts have we seen about Atomheart lately? He's only released an album everyother month for the last 2 years- about 80% of which is fucking awesome. But maybe that's too obscure, what about more sacntioned IDM like Bola, String Theory, Team Dyobi or Phonetia? They all rule. What about people that are well known but a little of the betten path like Lesser, Elect. Co, and Venetian Snares? So lets lay off teh AFX worship for a bit and let teh clones fall away for a little while and chat about what's making us excited right now... Donna S
