If Autechre continued creating music like they were in the early to mid 90's
(Incunabula, Amber, Tri Repetea) they would sound like so many others in the
IDM world today. They are innovaters and you have to appreciate that, even
if you can't grasp the music yet. How can you deny Chiastic Slide or LP 5?
Those albums were ground breaking! Even if they aren't as melodic and
textural, the rhythm programming contained on those two albums set they
standard for experiment laptop based electronic music. I see EP 7 and
Confield as a progression from their post Tri Repetea work, and a strong one
at that. The problem that most Autechre fans have, I my humble oppinion, is
that they are abandoning a familar structure (tempos shift, dissonent
harmonies collide, there's no particular climax or build, etc.) Regardless
if you agree with the progression or not, you have to admit that Autechre's
music still remains completely unique and beautifully visual. I have been a
fan from day one a I applaud them in every. They're making music for
themselves and ignoring the critiques like all prolific visionaries need to
do progress. Keep it up!!
