People don't give Autechre enough credit. They could still be doing halfway accessible music, like Chiastic Slide, and being doing it totally differently than someone else. I don't think they "evolved" with confield, so much as they went on a tangent with it. I don't have any opinion on the rest of the argument (I like all of their albums but Confield), but I don't buy the assumption that their later releases were some kind of logical progression from their earlier stuff.
