NYC's Electroclash compilation brought the sounds of the 1980's back to the future with a patchwork of tracks exhibiting various degrees of quality. Standing out from the crowd, completely devoid of the ironic tilt of most of its neighbors was a song called "Candy Girl" by a band I never heard of called Soviet. Utterly nostalgic for the best of the 80's synthesized pop, the song sounds completely familiar yet not at all identifiable. Definitely the highlight of the compilation. I'm still waiting to find a copy of their full length record, but hopefully they'll have some available at this show. Anyway when faced with the opportunity to open for them, I jumped at the chance. Soviet is featured in the current issues of Spin and The Fader; Those of you in Chicago should show up and catch the New Wave again... 9PM, Sunday June 16, 2002 Schuba's - 3159 N Southport Chicago USA http://prep.onshored.com/string/promo/soviet.html -- -- String Theory -- http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi -- String Theory's Anhedonia CD/LP available at finer music stores worldwide --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i wish i lived in chicago. the soviet full length "we are eyes, we are builders" is excellent. probably one of my favorite albums of the year so far. it is classic synth-pop with some modern flourishes, and utterly devoid of irony, as was mentioned below. in fact the lyrics on most of the tracks are fairly thoughtful and at times, i think romantic might be the right word, but without being cheesy (though this is synthpop, remember). the vocals are dead on depeche mode, but i don't think soviet sounds like a rip-off act. candy girl is easily my favorite track on the album. but, it's definitely not the only good track. of the 12 tracks, i find only one to be so so (breakdown). if you like synthpop at all, i can't see how you'd be disappointed with this album. definitely for fans of suction records, etc... i wish i lived in chicago. - d ----- Original Message ----- From: String Theory <string@onshore.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Wednesday, June 12, 2002 8:11 PM Subject: [idm] [CHICAGO] Soviet/String Theory @ Schuba's - 06/16/02 - 9PM
