all the stuff u mantioned is lame and outdated i am fed up with ethnic stuff since the 80s- it all stays the same, never developes. see, what i mean is you dont watch the same movie for 500 times, right? you go to see new stuff same with books - new books are written and music. arts(some people call it culture but technically culture is everything from arts to industry)- so, arts is a living organizm, it developes, grows, dies, gives births. So, if you are a gipsy and play your Piazzola guitar the same way for years you will bore people By the way Piazzola is portugal isnt he? It is not 3rd world. It is much more complicated than that. take China- 1.3 billion people. Any good arts? Ok, couple of peculiar movies, i even liked some, maybe a Mao cap i have hanging at my door,- 1.3 bilion sober people produced for the last 20 years when their gestapo stoped mass arrests and more or less free market climate was reached... Then take Germany- tottally ruined in 1945. Lost 2/3 of population and had everybody left brainwashed, raped by russian soldiers and sifilis rates of close to 80%(1945). Shoold i count films, books, music their people produced since 1945? i dont know the answer but liberal all-inclusive crap doesnt make no sense when you r trying to get to the bottom of things. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I was originally annoyed by your "third world" comment, but I actually agree with this clarification. Even the Nortec Collective or whatever it's called that everyone raves about seemed kind of gimmicky. "Oh, the white people will dig this one" type of thing. I don't really know if it's because the only thing that gets to .. first world or whatever countries is the watered down crap with ethnic gimmicks, so white people can tell other white people, "oh, cool, there's this new group from Mexico that's so cutting edge - they fuse IDM with ... traditional Mexican instrumentation. I'm so open-minded and multi-cultural for liking it!" If it would have been good, I would have liked it regardless of all that, but it made me yawn over and over again. Incidentally, I noticed that Microsoft plugged Nortec Collective when my stupid media player sidebar opened (I've tried everything and I still can't get IE6 to launch winamp for .wav). I would also like to say that in the past week I've laughed more reading this list than ever before. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? btw, i live in mexico and there is a lot of other music here besides those bums from nortec... i wish people wouldn't always think of them when mexico is mentioned, they have nothing to do with life in mexico really. i think they really suck and so does anyone here with a half a brain to their name... also a couple of years ago i saw the nortec bozos at the unionfest and they were playing to an empty field... everyone hated them, although playing to an empty lot kind of seems like the best thing they may have ever done as far as i can recall... my favorite act from here is called alcachofa, that's like that plant you eat the leaves off one at a time slathed in butter... the leaves i mean... these guys used to play some nice electrosalsa... i mean real honest to goodness salsa with some electronic elements... or sometimes just mixing electronic songs and salsa songs at a small club called La Perla in the downtown area, this was a couple of years back... it sounded lovely and i danced with a pretty girl... another nice group of people is parador analogo from which some members sometimes played nice soft lounge music on sundays at a club in a part of town known as "la condesa" which is kind of like coconut grove in miami (u.s.), well, maybe a little more tolerable... i'll try and post more on mexican music... as soon as i get my bearings... I was just agreeing with whoever said that music from 3rd world countries that make it to us gringos, all seems to be based on whatever traditional music from whatever country it originated from. Whether or not Nortec is good or not (I was just using them for an example, because they've managed to attract a lot of trendy yuppy ears here where I live) is not what I'm talking about. I'd be really interested to hear some of the electronic/salsa/lounge stuff you refer to, though. peace. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? The Nortec Collective is from Tijuana, which has a very US-influenced culture, as well as being a mix of many cultures from the rest of Mexico. I wouldn't call a composer using sound samples that are personal to them "gimmicky", I'd argue that most anyone with integrity does that. Maybe the sounds they use already have too many strong negative connotations for you to enjoy them, or maybe you just don't like what they do with them.... in any case, I think their stuff is pretty great, but then I grew up 50 miles from TJ in San Diego, so maybe those sounds have some personal meaning to me. dan On Wed, 6 Feb 2002, ugly and mean wrote:

living in san diego, a mere 15 minutes from tijuana, i just have to say that you've got the nortec collective all wrong. forget what the media tells you.. DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE. the nortec collective is simply a bunch of guys making electronic music that just happens to be influenced by the music that surrounds them in their environment. they are not some "culture schooling gimick" and they don't give a fuck about sounding "ethnic" because to them, that sound is not "ethnic" at all (in the white-middle-class-american sense of the term). it's just what their parents were listening to in the house while they were out playing cops and robbers in the back yard. in fact, the majority of them hate nortena music, just as most kids hate their parents' music. but instead of whining about it they decided to hijack it and make it into their own... perhaps we should start to criticize boards of canada for trying to push "ethnic 70s/80s canadian public broadcasting music" on us... what nortec has done for tijuana as a city and a culture is more than spectacular, and they should be respected for that, if not for the music itself. -j On Wed, 6 Feb 2002, ugly and mean wrote:

Hey s r, you are such a liar. After all your self righteous crap regarding drug use, I've finally realized that you haven't made a sober post to this list since I've noticed your name. You aren't stupid like everyone thinks, you're just high as a kite! And having a grand old time yanking everyone's chain, I'm sure. "Above your head" indeed... clever AND corny. What do I win for being the first to get the joke? I want some of whatever you're on, if I get a choice. Z __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Could definitely keep a dancefloor moving for hours and appeared to be playing stuff 'live' on a bunch of beatboxes, sequencers, etc. Can't remember if he even had a laptop (like it matters, just an aside.) Yes, Bostich is an orthodontist, and an amazingly nice, down-to-earth guy. His live shows are quite amazing, especially in TJ, where the kids down there eat it up like mad. It's so new and exciting to them, and you can feel it in the air. It's fucking beautiful. The "IDMest" of the Nortec crew would definately be Panoptica.. He's got more of a microhouse/DSP/glitch feel to his tracks, whereas the other guys are pretty straightforward. I would just like to chime in with a rejoinder of YES YES YES. Panoptica is an excellent album (I was surprised to see it's on Cert.18 though?) It's not overtly glitchy imo; lots of deeeeep dubby bass with a very minimal feel throughout. Go get!
