Unfortunately, the mix and the production seem good, but I dont want to spend much time listening to this guy’s music, because of that name. The list seems terribly silent on that matter. Names like that are pretty common in the breakcore circuit. They tend toward deliberately offensive/horrifying/inflammatory. Y'all ever see any of VSnare's album artwork or track names? Guess it depends on your feelings on being upsetting in (presumably) a tongue-in-cheek way. I can see it being a turnoff, but I also assume that Aaron Funk isn't actually advocating befriending child killers. Music is art blah blah censorship yadda yadda. Some friends of mine booked him in Seattle, they said the name is supposed to denote that he is the wife that is married to beats. Aha hey there Mauro! And yeah, I don't mean to be dismissive. It's not something I would choose to do. There's another artist out there who goes by something like "stage 4 cancer" or something that seems a bit insensitive as well, though not in quite the same way. I get that art doesn't need all it's edges sanded off, but I'd think if you're going to have a name like that, it at least deserves some kind of obvious explanation. Hi everyone, long time lurker. I think it seems obvious that his pseudonym has nothing to do with beating anyone up. It's a slippery slope for the arts. If artists keep catering to fragile safe spaces, and politically mandated speech and correctness, they will eventually be shut down for expressing opinions or even emotions that may differ from establishment ones. Perhaps music & percussion that's too aggressive sounding, fast, or doesn't conform to establishment ideology will be censored, & or shut down? As an example, RDJ has expressed differing opinions from establishment ones in various interviews. Also there was John Major's criminal justice bill which attempted to outlaw repetitive beats. "This artist name, or music makes me feel uncomfortable so lets ban it." Enough with the outrage. Life isn't always about being comfortable. Much of life is about struggle, and overcoming obstacles. I would argue this is the opposite of an archaic correlation assumption. This is a shift happening now. Everyday we are guilty and perpetuating male dominance over women. I am. @nat Well I used to date a girl in college, and we’d go to each other’s houses late at night and all that. Sometimes it would be well after dark, but neither one of us minded walking alone in a virtually crime-free college town. All was good. Cut to the next year, we’re no longer seeing each other and I had just started seeing someone else. One night when she was supposed to come over I asked if she was walking to my place or if she wanted me to come pick her up, and she got mad at me for even thinking she would walk across town at night, stating something like “you have no idea what it’s like to be a girl walking alone at night. It’s dangerous.” I told her that I’ve had plenty of female friends who had no problem doing that sort of thing and all she had to say to that was that they were idiots. 🤷‍♂️ Perhaps only slightly related, but this same girl tried to compliment me (I guess?) by telling me that I’m not white (I am) because I’m Cuban (there were black slaves owned by white people in Cuba), and that I was appropriating her culture by burning incense (basically every culture in human history has used incense). I guess the point is that people have different ideas of reality depending on the stories they subscribe to. I know some women who wouldn’t give a damn about the name beatwife and some that would flip out like you are. Maybe the ones that don’t care are privileged and have never been assaulted or whatever but I’m not so sure those things are correlated. It seems to me that a lot of the time when somebody gets on their soapbox and preaches about social issues that they’re doing it more for themselves than anyone else. As for my opinion, the name seems a bit distasteful but so be it. If you don’t like him don’t support him, but I think most reasonable people, victims of violence or not, wouldn’t get overly miffed about the name of a relatively esoteric musician. Nat, I think your reaction just highlighted the general mindset people have in the US. I have the feeling that your country is turning into an aseptic boring world because nobody wont say anything cause everybody gets easily chocked and outraged and triggered. The way we see it from here (europe, france, living in Paris) is that all the technology surrounding us gave us a voice, a way to be heard. And unfortunately, when everybody gives their opinion, you just realise that people won't make effort on themselves, they don't blame themselves anymore, it's always the others that have to change. When you dislike something, instead of trying to understand the thing/deal with it, you just say it's bad and it must be change. Well believe me, this mindset is just the best way to have a country full of entitled pricks that would never question themselves and would totaly freak out in front of adversity (life is not a piece of cake, as a reminder) So i agree we have to be more tolerant, we have to take care about each other. But don't let ourselves become weak people that can't overcome challenge and are afraid of even trying to understanding why we are so easily triggered now. nah, i'm good. you should re-read my previous email, what i've wrote in between parentheses, more precisely. what i was saying (in direct response to what Eric said about the breakcore circuit, and i add: the deathgrind scene too.) is that i find extremely silly the fact that people pick offensive / gimmicky names in order to be edgier, unless you're a 14 y/o (figure speech, no offense to the kids reading this thread) with even sillier ideas about the world, and about being rebelious (in contrast to what autechre did with that law). that was it. in any case i was critizicing the whole naming-my-band-something-offensive-because-it-is-funny and not 'beatwife' directly. *puts tin-foil hat on* it's conspiracy time: beatwife has a "cover" [0] or something of Britney Spears' "Baby one more time", and if you take the time to read the lyrics, it's a bit weird ("Hit me baby one more time / Oh baby, baby / The reason I breathe is you / Boy you got me blinded") [1]. and in his cover, he twists the meaning of the word /hit/ ("hit me acid one more time"), as in he might be talking about tripping on acid or playing acid. So he might be aware of the _other_ meaning of Britney's song. And possibly the controversy around his moniker.
