Mask, Skam, Smak releases all selling for several times their original price .... This is so crazy !!!!!!!!!!!! Some people probably just buy several pieces of each, wait a few months and then sell them (under different names of course) for big bucks on eBay ... This is NOT about the music anymore ("I paid a lot for it, so it MUST be good"), it's purely about "collecting" rare records ... !!! And why do labels like SKAM keep on releasing those records in RIDICULOUSLY low pressings ??? I haven't even SEEN a Smak release here in Belgium ...Why don't they repress old OOP records eg. Freeform 004, Jega 006, ... that are highly sought after ??? Sorry, didn't want to offend anyone, I'm just tired of this "its-rare-and-obscure-so-it-must-be-good-and-worth-lots-of-money-on-ebay" attitude ... Anyone else feeling like this ? (I definitely hope I'm not the only one, otherwise I'm gone) ... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

To be honest, I see auctions for records that are: 1. STILL in print, and people pay more than they can get them at the local store for. 2. Avaliable via mail order, and ppl just don't know where to get them from.

My opinion on rare records is like this: they are all not hard to find when they are released. If you read release lists and know good local and mail-order stores, you can get every record you want IF you get them fast. If people don't want to do the research, they miss out. Just like I'm not whining about not cashing in on internet stock, or the new pharmaceutical craze.. I'm not doing the research, and not getting the cash. If I see extra copies of SKAM (or other) releases lying around at my local record store (as I do often), I'm sure going to get them. If people want to pay cash for records, that's their own decision. But everything is available equally when it is released.

Pressing a record costs money. They cannot be continually pressing recent releases as well as re-release their old back catalog. That's why I think that old records are not re-pressed. I obviously do not really know how SKAM's record pressing works, but that is the most feasible idea I have. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Nope. Actually it costs you MORE to press small numbers. There are many stages of pressing that have nothing to do with how many records are pressed. You have mastering fees, plate production fees, acetate fees, etc. These are one time only pre-pressing production costs. If you press more when pressing time comes, then those costs can be distributed over the length of the run. If you press fewer then the individual units cost more to produce. Assume it costs $2,000 in pre-pressing costs and it costs $1 per record to press. If you press 200, it costs $2000/200 + $1 = $11 per record to produce. If you press 2000, it costs you $2000/2000 + $1 = $2 per record to produce. Sure the total for each is different ($2000 + 200 * $1 = $2,200 vs $2000 + 2000 * $1 = $4000), but your profit margins are better on bigger runs. Either way, you can only sell the record for around $10-$12 to the distributor (max). So when people make limited runs of vinyl, they're making little to no money on it. Pressing small numbers is purely for prestige and elitism. The guys at SKAM know they can sell 2,000+ copies of any release. Making limited releases builds them the reputation of being an exclusive or collectors label. Besides most the artists are making their money from other places like Warp or whatever. -rbc3 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Make a great connection at Yahoo! I dont think thats the total reason, i do agree with some of what you said. but they may not for certain have worked it that way in the begining. 4000 is still more than 2000 when you only have a set budget. If the label worked then sure, i would expect runs to expand, but releasing back catalogue while still releasing new work by same/similar artists isnt a very productive state for a label to be in.
