Little or no discussion on other idm as of late: Fennesz Luomo Gas I would love to hear some opinions on the new Fennesz "Endless Summer." It is an interesting "guitar-based" gitchwork soundscape. Different from other minimal musicians in that the guitar is a "warm" tonal instrument. Gas "Pop" I absolutely love. It was a Pitchforkmedia.com 2000 year end favorite as well. Listening to it reminds me of a big wind tunnel with distant/consistent beat and foreign soft sounds thrown into the hurricane. Awesome dyanamics and very emotive for a minimalist piece. The Luomo I have is "Multila" which got a great deal of praise....personally I find it a bit undeveloped....but that is fine since it goes into the "dusty background" section of my collection. Luomo == Vladislav Delay's Minimal-Tech-House ... Multila is wonderfull, as are most of VD's work, they all sound under-produced and raw, I like that, I think it shows a different aspect of IDM and electronic music in general... I have the same feeling with Rechenzentrum's releases, "the john peel session" is so nice ... and raw but I must admit, the sistol CD is a bit too raw ... Fennesz's "Endless Summer" is quite good in my opinion. It varies from some of his other work by focusing more on the source recordings of acoustic guitar, etc.... but does so in a way that is both raw/noisy and melodic/beautiful. Some of the newer Oval recordings (especially "Commers"), the newer Microstoria ("Model 3, Step 2") and work by Christopher Willits and Aeron Bergman have some similar qualities in the way that electro-acoustic instruments are filtered and treated in an abstract way. And while it's somewhat off the beaten path from Fennesz, I definitely must recommend the Vert "K?ln Konzert" which has been discussed in the past, but is still worth mention... less radical in treatments to the original upright piano sound, but done very very well. As I have mentioned in the past, the proper Luomo release I own ("Hypercity") didn't really live up to my expectations. But on the other hand I find "Multila" to be the best V.Delay CD I've got. Rather than undeveloped, I think it's developed quite thoroughly, but with a degree of patience by which the tracks evolve very subtly and gradually. I also find the Sistol release to be equally rewarding on this level, albeit in a slightly different context. I first stumbled onto Gas through the Modulation & Transformation compilations, without any real knowledge of W.Voigt's repertoire as Studio 1, etc... and picked up the "Zauberberg" CD on Mille Plateaux (which I think is the first one, if I'm not mistaken), which I still think is the best. I have heard "Konigforst" and have "Pop" and while both are similar, "Zauberberg" seems a bit moodier, darker... not as light-ambient in tone as "Pop." However, Gas in general is one of Voigt's more successful projects to my ears.

+------------------------------------+ m.mercer :: systm audio-visual communicator http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/98/systm.html mmercer@kent.edu :: vletrmx@hotmail.com

On Hypercity, if I recall, there's only one track and it's a bad remix ... I find the whole Luomo release more constant and flowing.

Actually, the first one is his self-titled release (MP32) http://shop.force-inc.com/jump.php4?aid=MP032 There's RealAudio-Streams for 5 of the 6 tracks on that page, so give it a listen - it's also a bit different than his later works... :) -- Kurt Bernhard Pruenner --- Haendelstrasse 17 --- 4020 Linz --- Austria .......It might be written "Mindfuck", but it's spelt "L-A-I-N"....... np: Sense - All Around Me (A View From A Vulnerable Place) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
