i fully agree with brian here and i'm starting to get erked by the IDM i've been coming across. it's getting too complacent. where is the passion?! there's no fire in this music. too passive. i came into this music through early aphex and mu-ziq. that shit rocks like anything rocks. it kicks ass. IDM these days seems way way too glossy and dreamy and dead. and as a disclaimer i'll claim ignorance of every niche of the scene right now, so dont get mad at me, show me what there is... i'll take vanetian snares over tel aviv...

Well personally, I don't think that music has to "rock" or "kick ass" (two descriptive terms which annoy me to no end) to be passionate. On the contrary, some of the most passionate music ever recorded is about as far from being aggressive as can be imagined. Check out some of Billie Holiday's more mournful songs like "Strange Fruit", or Sinatra tracks like "In The Wee Small Hours" and "It Was A Very Good Year", and tell me that you don't hear any passion. Yes, there's a place in the electronic spectrum for noisy, "kick ass" stuff like early Aphex and mu-Ziq, and Venetian Snares, and the like. When I'm in the mood for something heavy and fun, I'm perfectly fine with that. But there's also a place for more mellow, introspective, melodic work, and there can be just as much "passion" in that stuff if you're in the right frame of mind. What about the last/new Squarepusher ? Otto Von Schirach ? Phthalocyanine ? Is it time again already for this discussion? The "where's all the good stuff?" discussion? "It's all too [noisy, wanky, DSP'd, simple, difficult, melodic, beaty, smooth, crunchy, whatever you hate] lately; where's all the good stuff I used to like?" 1) There is no "new IDM vs. old IDM". There are numerous artists doing a broad range of styles. 1b) There *are* more artists and a broader range of styles now than there have been in the past. This is a good thing. 2) If you don't like what you're listening to, turn it off. 3) If you prefer what you were listening to previously, go back to it. Enjoy it. You went through the effort of obtaining it, didn't you? 4) If you absolutely must have new music, try out new stuff. Don't expect to like everything. 4a) If you try out artists X, Y, and Z, and none of them appeal to you, don't assume that you've tried out every artist and therefore know everything, and definitely don't start complaining that "all this new IDM is so [_____]; what happened to the good stuff?" 4b) Maybe ask the list for suggestions. Say what you liked before, what you don't like now; you're bound to get some good pointers. Again, keep in mind that you won't like everything, nor will every suggestion be a good one *for you*. 5) Are Telefon Tel Aviv really IDM? What is IDM anyway? 5b) Don't you even dare to ask the list the question posed in #5 above, ask it of yourself. 6) If you're going to complain about the "sad state of IDM today" or some such nonsense, don't conclude your message with a statement like "i'll take vanetian snares over tel aviv..." Obviously you know a current artist that you do like, and all you wanted to do was express distaste and negativity towards another current artist that you don't like. 6b) In other words, if you're enjoying some music, and other people are enjoying different music, and you don't like the music that other people are enjoying, it's very childish and pathetic to try to turn the situation into a pissing match over whose favorite artists are "better." (As if such a thing were even possible...) -Adam (who has violate most, if not all, of these points at one time or another in the past, but learned from his mistakes ;) --- nat hawks <natbot@hotmail.com> wrote:

Bleh. Those of us who enjoy chilling out are all about it. I'm very happy that someone is finally successfully melding chicagoesque (read: tortoise) post rock type stuff with IDM. (yeah, tortoise has some idm'y tracks, but they've always just kind of flirted with it, for the most part.) More people standing in front of laptops with guitars, please. I love it. --nm On Tue, 25 Sep 2001, nat hawks wrote:

i picked it up as well, and it certainly sounds pretty. I'm really into the idea of guitars with laptops, but i personally find the guitars on Telefon Tel Aviv a bit too clean and polished; most certainly Tortoise-esque, but in that almost classicaly trained jazz way. -th --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

firstly, this is good. there's been a little of that missing 'fire' i was talking about in these last few posts!

i feel so stoked and happy to be able to take part (as consumer, performer) in what is an incredibly historic turning point in not just electronic, but all of music.

ok, ok. this list is way into maintaining an un-human level of objectivity. i was feeling a little, well, let's say 'passionately' about my frustration. i wrote an illadvised, impassioned email that was ignorant in many ways, and now i'm receiving passionate responses that will hopefully lead me to the light. i love this listserve and it has shown me many great things.

Well, if you want to keep hitting yourself with a spiky stick, don't complain to me (us?) about it. If you like the pain, you might mention that (ie., "This new Richard Devine album is so caustic and loud, I just love it!"). If others of us prefer to sit in comfy chairs (props to Monty Python) instead of climb inside an iron maiden, you can't really complain when we start saying how great some chairs are. So I guess what I'm saying is: if you like pointy sticks and pain, that's fine, but it's not wrong for other people to like comfy chairs.

Passion can be positive or negative, and one can be passionately objective. And I am not the list. There are plenty of people on the list who are not like me (anal robot) and more like yourself (human).

Jetone has an album on Pitchcadet and another one on Force Inc., I think.

Twerk has an album out, too. "Now I'm Rendered Useless"

Proem Proem Proem Proem Proem Proem !!!!!! Anyway, sounds like you have plenty of artists you know and like. What are you complaining about? On the other hand, maybe others who share your interests more closely will be able to help you out better. I hear Data'chi is good. Maybe you'd like some of the artsts on Planet Mu, like Hellfish. The upcoming album by Hrvatski might be up your alley, though I don't know as I haven't heard anything from it. My own current favs are Proem, Gimmik, and Freeform. The new Telefon Tel Aviv blows my ears away; it's amazing to my head, but it's not exactly at the center of my listening interests, either. -Adam PS - I didn't buy it. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
