Warp is doing OK. Warp is still independent, and from all reports aims to stay that way for the forseeable future. As someone who has a small label, I can say from first hand that an operation like Warp is NOT making big bucks. Everything the big three media conglomerates do, take about 4 zeros off the end and you get Warp. A huge hit for warp sells 50k copies? Sony loses more copies to shoplifting than that every month. There are very few people in electronic music really making a living from it. I program computers for a living, and I bet I make more money than a significant percentage of the Artists on Warp. And even the most popular artists on their artist likely make less than your dentist. I buy a lot of Warp releases. If you like the music you should too. I have zero patience for something-for-nothing leeches. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

that really tiked me off. its more than true, especially in the IDM scene, that ppl use the mpeg scene to get a taster for artists and then they actually support artists buy buying releases. i would not have heard of half the stuff if it was not for leech freindly portals on the net _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I don't have a problem with that. It's like hearing things on the radio and then buying it (or not). There are loads of people who buy very few things, but have dozens of CDRs full of MP3 tracks. If people don't buy records and CDs, the record labels fold. If the record labels fold then artists can't support themselves with their music. And I reserve the right to be ticked off at people who, in general, feel like the world owes them a living, and get a big buzz out of getting over on other people. I'm not talking about YOU, or accusing anyone in particular. When I was a kid I used to tape stuff off the radio all the time. Didn't seem to hurt the artists.

"The world doesn't owe you anything. It was here first." -- Mark Twain That having been said: something must be said for the wonderous excesses of capitalism, and how a man can make a completely honest living - and thrive - doing absolutely nothing at all. Depends on how much money you have. When I was a teen, I used to make tapes from the college station whenever I had spare time because I didn't have money to buy tapes. When I found something I really liked, I went to the record store as soon as I got money for it. It was always a matter of availability and finances that kept me from buying new music. I don't have enough money to buy more than 2 or 3 cds a month, (which is still more than a lot of people I know spend on music) so I know nobody is losing money from my music listening habits. Wait, I take that back. There are artists losing money from my new music listening habits: Musicians that suck. I feel like mp3s have empowered me as a consumer to make wiser choices at the record store. No more of those weekends where I take my hard-earned money up to some record store and buy a cd by some group that got great word-of-mouth praise on this list only to go home and realize that it completely sucks. No more buying a compilation and hearing two great songs by a group, then going out and getting their CD and realizing those are the only two good songs on it. Wiser choices in the record store mean more money for the artists that I feel deserve it, therefore empowering me to empower the artist that earned my respect and love in the first place. These guys that feel like they are "getting one over on society" by collecting and sharing massive amounts of mp3s most likely wouldn't be buying music in the first place if it wasn't for file-sharing. These people are mostly into file-sharing, not music listening. These people unwittingly make money for record companies when they share music that I like enough to purchase. They are doing for free what many record labels pay a lot of money to radio stations to do: Publicize the music and spread the word. Philosophically, I hate these mooches with their T-3s and 80gb hard-drives full of albums they didn't pay for, but I've been extremely happy with the last 40 or 50 cds I've bought so far this year because of them. And as an amateur musician, I like that eventually there might be more out there like me that just like to dabble with unfamiliar music that are sitting on a respected file-sharer's hard drive. Who knows, maybe an amateur like me will develop a little group of listeners because one of my song titles caught their eye. It levels out the playing field a little bit for amateur musicians and labels like Warp that don't have the money to play the payola game in the U.S. ===== check out my station on Live365 - over 8 hours worth of early 90's chill-out, IDM, dub and more at: http://www.live365.com/stations/278479 check out my homepage at: http://www.skack.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? that really tiked me off. its more than true, especially in the IDM scene, that ppl use the mpeg scene to get a taster for artists and then they actually support artists buy buying releases. i would not have heard of half the stuff if it was not for leech freindly portals on the net _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Exactly. I hate buying without being able to listen first. But if I like what I hear I always buy. And I end up buying more stuff because mp3's have exposed me to so much. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I have to agree. I prefer to buy CDs also, but I don't have a ton of money so I tend to go for stuff that I've been introduced to by someone else, or had recommended to me, or can listen to in the store - there is some IDM that I find deeply boring or annoying and I don't want to waste my measly supply of cash. I find mp3s great for checking out some artist that I'm curious about but haven't heard yet - my tiny contribution to Aphex Twin's sales figures is entirely due to mp3. That's also how I first heard Boards of Canada, Venetian Snares, and a few other artists whose stuff I now have on CD. For me personally, I must agree with Anig. There are sooooo many artists I would have NEVER purchased at all had it not been for mp3s. DMX Krew, Plaid, Funkstorung, Cylob, Cex, Herbert, as well as countless 12s... honestly I could list them all day. But still it does come down to the person. If I like it I show my support for that artist and buy it (unless they cancel their US tour). Some people however don't care. I feel that any so called lost revenue due to mp3 piracy is made up for by the free exposure and bigger fan base artists gain. The fact is... I would not be so into IDM had it not been for mp3s, not even close. Sure mp3s help you decide what CDs to buy, but what about the artists who suck? Don't they deserve to make a living by you blindly buying their CD because of the fractal on the cover without having a clue how bad the music sucks? np: Sven Vath and I'll be damned if I am returning it. rw ----- Original Message ----- From: "Moe Rocca" <moerocca@hotmail.com> To: "'IDM List'" <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Sunday, August 26, 2001 9:19 PM Subject: RE: Sv: [idm] DRUKQS01
