This comes up once in a while in various forms and guises, so I'm sorry if this really bugs some of you. What tracks do you people think just seem to be the wrong length? Like, it was so good it should be longer, or it just feels like it ended too soon. Or, it should be shorter for some opposite reasoning... Here are the few I've noticed that prompted me to write this: Autechre "krib" from cichlisuite; this should be longer. It's gorgeous and they just stop it too soon. Bogdan Raczynski "Pierwsze kroki" (track 6) from the new EP; I can't decide if the short, wrong-note cut-off is artful genious or just damn annoying. Autechre "lentic catechresis" from confield; too long. Excellent album-closing effect, until it just keeps going and going... Autechre "all tomorrow's linoleum" from the all tomorrow's parties 1.0 comp; not to pick on AE, I've just been listening to them a lot lately. Anyways, I like this track, but it seems roughly cut at the end. Just a little longer would feel better to me. Proem "boring alice" from Aurora comp; gorgeous track, too short, though maybe it would be less gorgeous if it were longer. Why am I sending this in? It'll only bring me flames... -Adam __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Make international calls for as low as $.04/minute with Yahoo! This is absolutely a pertinent issue. One that always bugged me was Autechre's "Eutow." Way too short. And I know I would be a much bigger CiM fan if his songs were longer, but as they are I can barely even listen to Reference. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I think there's always some subjective reasoning to this sort of thing. I'm going to take the zen approach. they're all the perfect length, because that's the length they are. cheers, derek ------- eggytoast.com ------- now with zen --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I think sometimes too much of a good thing can turn it bad.... For me personally sometimes when Im working, I would really like to take a really kick ass track into 6 or 7 min...but I stop at about 3. Sometimes the options for expansion just are not there, and looping it over too much could potentially bore the listener. Sometimes when I hear a really great track and it suddenly ends at around 2-3 min., I feel let down for a moment....but common' we all hit that back-track button at least once....makes you think "DAMN! what a kick ass song!...gotta hear it again!" As for songs that are too long, I dont get that all to often...there are a few AE songs for example that can successfully loop a few drones, and with the right backing, and almost random effects....can carry for 7-8 min... and Aphex Twin S.A.W.v2...it just depends on the mood...like a 7 min. trance track! I'd go mad! "thump-thump-thump-thumthump"(looped) 4/4 kicks looped for 7 min with scaling cheesy Alesis Q card trance sounds drives me mad!...and to think that thats what often tops at MP3.com.......I wont get into that.
