Having read the article about her in the Wire this month, I get the feeling that the money might be better spent. Buy a cheap effects box and set up a dense feedback delay, add a radio shack microphone hanging out the window and/or take lots of drugs. Of course I am being horribly unfair, but I can't help the feeling that this kind of 'micromusic' is only really enjoyable on a participative level. If you are that interested you probably spend a lot of time just listening to the sound of your environement and interesting spaces anyway...I'm not sure how much more one would get out of it by doing it in a group. Um, but why do you need a workshop as an excuse to do this? Just get high (or not, though it helps) and go sit in a forest for the afternoon, or a cave, or whatever sort of spaces you find interesting. I don't mean to run down the workshop, it's great for introducing the concept to people who would perhaps never bother to listen this way otherwise, but once one has the idea to do this lessons seem kind of redundant to me. Spoken like someone who's never tried it (Deep Listening). Deep Listening is more than just listening to rocks and trees. It's about listening to other people and learning from them. It also incorporated discussions of dreams, meditation, and Tai Chi. We stayed in a convent, so the food was homegrown (by the nuns) and I had a pretty peaceful, relaxing stay. Not to mention the added benefit of meeting all sorts of musicians (and not) from all walks of life. My favorite part was sitting in my car with four strangers, listening to their compositions and conversations. I'm not suggesting that the experience is for everyone, but I think it can be a very good one. I haven't attended one of the workshops, but it doesn't sound all that different from the way I try to spend a good part of time normally. Perhaps I have a less busy lifestyle than yourself or something. As I said elsewhere I'm not against the idea of the workshop at all, but personally I would prefer not to have someone guiding the direction of that sort of experience. Incidentally I have no problems with the social dimension, I enjoy listening time spent with musical (or not) friends as much as I do that on my own. I believe that was a Pauline Oliveros joke. She plays accordian through some crazy electronics setups. I've never done one of Pauline's workshops, but I know her and Stewart Dempster personally & seen the Deep Listening Band on numerous occasions. (And, actually, I'm a little amazed at most of the the IDM-sters ignorance of their work over the last 10 years -- I guess until it's in Wire it doesn't count as IDM, eh?) If you want to learn to be conscious of the human body as sound receptor and how to reflect that knowledge in your own music, she's probably a good teacher for you. If you just want to drop a tab of e and swing your glowsticks, you can probably find a better use of your money. (Just think of how many visors and wide-leg pants you could buy with $250!!! Accordions are kind of inherently cool to me, there's something about the whole notion of bellows (including uileann pipes and the like) which is cute. I like that. Accordians, bagpipes, pipe organs, instruments which could almost produce sound without human interference. Just thinking of the old 19th century experiments with vocal tract "synthesizers", bellows and all, trying to imitate the human voice. Those were nifty.
