Does anybody know any steady and uptempo DJ mixes to exercise to? I've heard 70 minutes of madness one time to many when I work out. Out of curiosity, what do you guys play when you exercise? Pedro Cevallos -- "...beginning in the fourteenth century, the clock made us into time-keepers, and then time-savers, and now time-servers. Exercise?! No thanks. I do put on both IDM and psy trance and dance to it, which I guess helps keep me fit. But not in a formal way. If I need to burn off some major physical energy then I prefer a 4 to the floor track, if I just feel like moving to music then I might just as easily cut a rug to Confield. I'm not much of a dancer, but for those of you who are help me out a minute. Exactly how would you dance to something like Confield? Do you just do a generic one-size-fits-all motion? Or do you move all limbs of your body in time to different parts of the song? Do you have to know the soundscape of the tune you're dancing to? Or are you able to predict what'll happen next (not easy with Autechre). It's not that I don't believe this music is danceable-to (without looking like a complete dork), I just can't visualise it myself. Can one dance to noise-IDM and not look like they're on a gram of speed? --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I think the basic motion that most people do to Confield consists of primarily arm and leg movements. Quick analyses of the songs by IDMAnalyze, which can be found at http://www.idmtools.com/idmanalyze reveals that the following pattern is most optimal: 1. While nodding head, squat down low to floor. 2. Bob up and down a few times by bending and extending knee joints. 3. Slowly separate thighs. 4. As arms flail about randomly, bring order to arm movements. 5. One arm approaches the joint where both thighs meet. 6. Arm inserts iself down shorts/jeans/pants/whatever. 7. Fingers grasp whatever they find. 8. Slow rhythmic movements are made as bobbing up and down resumes. 9. Continue for entire album, disregarding any bodily excretions that may occur. And most of all, ENJOY! -- jr --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Confield, oh how excited was I, another autechre album, mmm, can't wait, maybe it'll be another, incunbala, tri repetae, or maybe even amber or the brilliant garbage..... imagine my dismay to find that it was to quote the infamous scottish comedy show chewin the fat "a lotta shite"... don't get me wrong i'm all for aural experimentation and abstract sounds but forgive me if i overstep the mark here... but i thought the point of IDM was in the title of the genre... I personally have experimented with abstract sounds and the loading sound from my old 48k Spectrum (Rubber Ket Version) but i never thought of sticking it out on CD and charging folks £12-14 quid for a coaster.... listening experience.... shit... why can;t the make music like they used to ... take gimmik for instance, early Autechre-esque, moved on in the right direction but utterly brilliant... Wow! You just managed to combine the two of the all-time bandwidth-wasting subjects of the IDM list: 1) Why doesn't Autechre make good music any more? 2) What is IDM? The answers are: 1) They do. You just don't like it. Forget about them, and move on. It's silly to expect artists to keep producing the same stuff, no matter how "good" it is or how much you may like or dislike it. I've no doubt that Autechre could produce a worthy successor to Amber or Tri Repetae if they wanted to. But they obviously don't. Deal with it. 2) A mailing list. The initials may have referred to something long, long ago, but that's barely relevant now. The intelligence, danceability, and musicality of the recordings and performances discussed there are all debatable, but long experience teaches that such debates never go anywhere. Ever. Sorry. -Ed --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

well that's me told then, huh.... "IDM" I, don't actually remember asking what IDM meant and who cares anyway, genres and labels are made up by people like me who work within the media, you see it's much easier to sell things when they have what is perceived to be a desirable label.... I joined this list because the label "IDM" allegedly fits my sphere of musical interests, not to be preached at... now where's my speedy j (a shocking hobby) cd I want some aural violence.... Paul
