Hiya, I just called the guys from Mille Plateau and they said to me that the MP-11 EP is NOT an EP but the first record of the new double LP from Alec Empire. The release will be at the end of feb. The guy was wandering how I know something about this record. He said they sent only one copy to each store and the records are't for resale. He was very disappointed about the fact that somebody sells their promos. Hope that helps. Marc

Yeah, thanks! I bought it for 1UKP from whats called the 'promo bin'. This is where the shop dumps their promos and sells them cheaply. Yeah, its irritating for the labels, but it's bloody handy for everyone else. Plus, Mille Plateaux get me harping on about this new release and plugging it like hell until it's finally released. alec empire used to put out a slew of breakcore records on force inc. some of the more notables included suecide1 and suecide2. he also tracks on the 'against the nazis' compilation and he did an ep with biochip c entitled 'das duell'. it was all really dirty sounding 'breakbeat'. didn't sound much like the british stuff, tho it had similar samples. a remix of a track off of suecide1 came out that was in a weird fucked-up housey vein. not too bad. he owns the label RIOT BEATS which is all breakcore. he also did a record recently with ian pooley thast was interesting. very trancey and spaced out. i guess nowadays he has changed style... .:damian / dieselboy .:rock the bells kid .:damian+@pitt.edu

Was this the same Alec Empire, who used to have a German band called Atari Teenage Riot? I remember the British music magazines trying to hype up this act a couple of years ago as some kind of 'radical techno punk band'. I think they vanished without a trace since... Thanks for the info. The Ian Pooley on Force Inc. (_Twin Gods_?) is pretty tasty BTW. I also listened to Alec Empires' retrospective LP on Mille Plateaux, although I couldn't afford it; its pretty nice as well tho' not as sculptured or as in your face as that promo. Looks like checking out however... || [CiM] || u9323899@sys.uea.ac.uk || http://www.sys.uea.ac.uk/~u9323899/

If you like the ATR sound, go for his albums "The Destroyer" and also his first stuff in that vein, "Squeeze The Trigger". "The Destroyer" was composed on a bet/dare with a friend, who wanted to see if Alec was up to composing an entire album, listenable as such, that was breakbeat hardcore, and functions surprisingly well as a complete listen. The prototype IMO of the whole DHR sound as a label is to be found here. "Squeeze The Trigger" is basically a collection of singles from an earlier period and while there's good stuff to be found a lot of it is homogenized, 12" one-off stuff and not as well mastered as "Destroyer". Plus "Destroyer" takes a lot of the ideas/structures and advances them quite a bit. For other more 'cerebral' stuff there's, well, quite a bit. Alec was on Mille Plateaux for quite a while before he went and got his own imprint. For my taste I prefer "Generation Star Wars" and "Limited Editions 1990-94" which is pretty forward in its own right. "Hypermodern Jazz" and the "Iceland Sessions" are OK but not particularly super in my book- both are kind of concept records, ventures into fruity electronic jazz and slow, pan sonicesque minimalism, respectively. He also has a 3CD box set, the first release on DHR's IDM sublabel Geist, which features highlights from all his MP releases before he split with them. It's pretty good, but good luck finding one. I bought a copy for my college radio station, now I kind of wish I'd hung onto it. Last but not least are his contributions to the "Electric Ladyland" series on MP, sort of the plodding German answer to Ninjatune's "Earthrise" comps I guess, breakbeats and such with all manner of weirdness on top and underneath, something I thought was pretty exciting but apparently nobody else did, otherwise they might still be releasing new additions... I downloaded a few tracks from Napster a few months ago that were Alec Empire + Techno Animal. I love the songs and have looked for the album, but can't seem to find anything out about it. I don't know anything about Alec Empire, and I've been behind on Techno Animal, so I'm wondering if these mp3s were mis-labelled or something. Some of the songnames: Temple of the Yellow Snake, Kamikaze Space Programmer, Ultrasonic, Caucasian Deathmask (my favorite title). Anyone? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! The first exposure that I had to the breakcore scene was via Alec Empire's "Destroyer" album which still rates somewhere on my top 10. I really have liked everything he has done (not counting the ATR stuff) except for one album that I am not sure if I like or not. "Nintendo Teenage Robots" is such a painful album to listen to. I appreciated the attempt at doing something different but it isn't exactly an album that I would put on at a social gathering. ...Sounds like he figured out what sounds the original Nintendo gaming machine could produce and ran with it, in a very interesting way.

Yup- in the last Time Out NY, he was dissing on their current roster as being too obsessed with the latest gear.

All four are pretty excellent- Hypermodern Jazz was exactly how I always hoped "acid jazz" would sound like- n degrees of loopiness in programming with feeling "jokey" a la Senor Coconut (of course, this is not at all what acid jazz aspires to, but in terms of semantics...). Ltd Editions is melodic, slightly downtempo techno which wouldn't sound out of place on the AI comp. Iceland Sessions is certainly the most minimal (though much too cavernous in feel to remind me of the blistering Panasonic). GSW is sort of a weird triangulation of all of his aesthetics and very lovely as well. His final record for MP was "Les Etoiles des Filles Mortes" or some such- he claimed it to be Stockhausen influenced and it's definitely the most abstract of the releases. -rob --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

ATR did back up for NiN a year or two ago in Brixton, London - they were amazing...a bit different live to what they do on their records...the crowd hated them, 'cause they were mostly sad goth types...they kept booing, and crying..."he's too ugly to be musical, trent reznor is much prettier", etc.... Basically, they came on, Alec had a guitar, and went up to the mic, the drum machines started, the synths started going...he plucked a few chords, took the guitar, smashed it on the ground (pretty much left it there for the rest of the gig), grabbed the mic and started squeeling into it...meanwhile the lady and gent behind (can never remember their name, and ain't willing to go upstairs to look it up...Nic Endo is one...eh...yeah...) stood twiddling stuff, slowing the drum machine down, and speeding it up, pretty much randomly...the sound got more and more distorted, lots of clipping, delay units going into overdrive...a general mess (would say cacophony, but thats so pretentious sounding) of sound...I kept jumping up and down, screaming...what a great gig...just for the fact that all the NiNers were so pissed off by it... :) RoNAn P.S. NiN were quite good too... P.P.S. I know this doesn't answer your question...but...ah feck it... P.P.P.S. I think they released that gig on CD too... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Thomas Millar" <tmillar@mbayweb.com> To: <elephnt@rootrec.net>; <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Thursday, June 28, 2001 7:22 AM Subject: Re: [idm] alec empire

That would be 'Curse of the Golden Vampire' - the collaboration between Alec and T/A. Excellent, bone crushing stuff. Highly recommended. This album is called "The Curse Of The Golden Vampire" released on DHR a couple of years ago. It is done by both Alec Empire and Techno Animal, but the actual cataloging of the album doesn't say that. You should still be able to find it in many places. TekDz9er

I saw ATR quite a few years back at the Opera House in Toronto, they had other DHR acts open: EQ80R, Shizuo (sp?). The show was pretty interesting. All the acts were pissed about the sound being so quiet, and then ATR took the stage and demanded the sound to increase, threatening the sound person with the mic stand. Alec took his penis out and wagged it around for a while at the Opera House manager and crew, then jumped on to the speaker stack and climbed it to hang from a little balcony. The whole time the music was going, but the sound was so distorted that the only song you could make out was the intro drum stuff and samples to "Start the Riot!". For what it was worth though, one of the best shows I have ever seen, despite not hearing anything but crackles and clipping. Oh yeah--at one point Alec even tried to get us to riot. Being a crowd of polite Canadians, however, we all sat around uncomfortably looking at each other. ("should we riot?", "I'm not sure, someone might get hurt...." har har). cheers Mark & Melissa hellothisisalex www.hellothisisalex.com / records.hellothisisalex.com mp3s at www.raw42.com/cgi-bin/featuredartist.pl?artist=213; www.headjunk.com mark@hellothisisalex

HA HA!! Sure, he gives off the air of a pompusly bombastic- underthought muck raker, but was he ever really that "harmful", now was he? But I'll give him massive respect for being the major disseminatng force behind all sorts of Breakcore/hardcore. Plus he DID have some good tracks like "Destroy 5000 years of Culture" and a handful on the Destroyer Lp. Seems liek he sort of has faded away rather than burned out, but I haven't heard the new one yet, very curious. "Generation Star Wars" was awesome ... and speaking of Alec Empire: this 3 CD set DHR just released - "Don't F**k With Us" - is pretty great. I guess it's all these U.S. artists that sent in demos to DHR. Very cool - lots of wierd vocals and metal guitar and static ... super harsh breaks but also some mellower stuff - lots of noise and variety. I recommend! dave -----Original Message----- From: donna summer [mailto:donnasummerwfmu@hotmail.com] Sent: Sunday, August 04, 2002 4:43 PM To: component@mindstorm.com; idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [idm] re:Alec Empire
