Well, incredibly enough, it looks like the Migros of Switzerland has a kind of cultural action that involves putting out idm compilations. Migros is the leading supermarket chain in Switzerland. http://www6.migros.ch:8001/kulturprozent/kulturbeutel/ has some kind of explanation, but it is in Swiss German so I can only guess... Luckily, Swiss German, in written form, is the same thing as your basic standard high, so I can help out a bit. The Migros "percent for culture" seems to be calling the platter by two different names-- Migros Rmxs is the header they used to refer to the project, but Migros Data is what was printed on the surface of the record itself (along with an expiration date and use before date in three languages). As far as what was printed on the cover for the record, the graphic was too small to read, although "Migros Remixes" seems plausible from the length of the words. From the materials I could find, the record appears to be part of a larger project on the part of the Migros company to "convert economic capital into cultural capital". The disc consists of "remixes" of Migros itself, that is, tracks made using sources from Migros materials, store music, music concerts put on by Migros, sounds of shopping, and even interviews or speeches given by Migros' founder. The general organization operates under the name Migros Kulturprozent, or "percent for culture" which refers to the company's giving up one percent of their profits to cultural activities, although their specific orientation in this particular project is to create an active interface between economics/business and culture. It's either very, very cool or somewhat insidious, depending on how you want to view it. I'm not familiar with the company, but from looking a few other Migros Kulturprozent sites, they seem awfully radical in aesthetic for a supermarket, which (at least in America) tend to be extremely conservative institutions (so as not to offend or deflect any possible food-consuming individual, i.e. anyone). If 80-90% of American demographics aren't fully behind something, I wouldn't expect Safeway to endorse or even acknowledge its existence. All in all, even though some of Migros' "social" actions have taken the form of parks surrounding their business campuses or fitness complexes, I'm reasonably impressed. Cheers, M. Basically they have this 'We turn the meaning of 'Economy' (read Cheap) into more Value (Quality) slogan at the moment ... I hate translating from German. So.... a free translation of the spirit of the thing rather than directly. They invited representatives of current electonic music to use samples from Migros material (jingles, interviews, shop-ambience/environmental sounds and concerts they put on) and produce a track. They could mess up, mix, cut & paste the samples anyway they wanted and the only condition was that they actually use some of the migros stuff... thus complete artistic freedom was guaranteed (ahem) The results, pressed to vinyl, are consistent with the normal artistic output of the musicians.... with the single limitation of maximum 7 minutes per track. Then it goes on to describe how the DJ, Roli Widmer gathered all the samples together and gives source information etc... that's the CD image you see at the top. I'm not actually sure if they are seeing a CD is available or not... it might be saying it is available with the original sample CD together so you can check both inputs & outputs. Whatever.... these are pretty exclusive tracks and you are not likely to find them anywhere else.... which is probably what most of the artists are hoping for as they obviously sold their souls for wads of Swiss Franks to commerce ;) Actually... the Migros is really supportive of all sorts of new artistic endeavours and fresh talent... so they are not a bad choice to sell out to ;) Hope this was helpful... and I hope that means I get away with not turning off my spammy sig-file ;) Peace Zoz/TLF ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Orblike - Orbitalesque - Art of Noise-ish The Love Frequency: http://www.mp3.com/tlf ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
