Hello. For no reason in particular, I decided to stick Richard Kirk's "Virtual State" in the CD player tonight for the first time in years. Jeez, I'd forgotten just how good this album is. I have fond memories of driving backwards and forwards between college and home with this, Autechre's "Incunabula", B12's "Electro-Soma" and Black Dog's "Bytes" on constant rotation. Lovely, hypnotic melodies and trance-like rhythms, crispy ambience, African music/vocal samples and an atmosphere like no other. I never did get round to buying Kirk's other Warp album. How does that compare? Actually I think 'The Number of Magic' is less trancey, in the sense that all the tracks are not interwoven and carry a continuous theme the way they do on 'Virtual State'. Virtual State tells one long story where all the songs bleed into each other, Number of Magic is 9 or 10 seperate and distinct tracks. With that said Number of Magic rocks, and has all the serenity, funk and tribal sample flavors that Virtual State does. They came out back to back and not for far apart from each other, I consider them almost a pair. Whoever the orginal poster was, definitely pick up The Number of Magic, it's great. These 2 albums are my favorite RHK solo efforts, with the possible exception of the first 2 Sandoz records. -nate On Fri, 18 May 2001, henrik stromberg wrote:

I was lucky to pick up that CD quite a few years ago, and still play it now and again. On a related note, the other half of the former Cabaret Voltaire, "Mal", lives right here in Perth and does the Full frequency show on RTR FM.. While not exactly IDM, his most recent combo, Ku-ling Brothers have a couple of CD's out already. It will always be a favorite. I love this album. So intense. So much different form alot of his other stuff, jus tin terms of the sound. Listen to it against the electronic eye stuff from the period and you will notice it sounds clearer and crisper than the others of that period. I too, quite accidentally, ended up listening to Dickey H yesterday. I fired up my old Honda to get it working again and as I drove it to the shop the only thing to listen to in the car was a mix tape I'd made for someone on this list ages ago, like 1996 or so, of all his CD's. he only had 6 or 7 then! but it was great, Just made me get back in touch with what I love and why I still make music.

Someone else mentioned it is similar but I disagree. At the pint he made Number of Magic, he was getting out of the ambient stuff and more into hardcore and funkier stuff like he does now. The hardcore I could do without, although he has done it to great effect on the Loopstatic (SP?) record recently. Number is much funkier and grittier than other stuff he's done. And he plays guitar on it!!! How cool is that?!?!? Picking up on this days late - I'm another fan of Virtual State - bought it on prerecorded Warp cassette when it came out - I still find it wonderfully evocative, resonant, warm - like a sepia tinted photograph of the future suffused with pathos - ooh - 'scuse me, I'm coming over all cod-poetic. Thanks for the recommendation of the other Richard Kirk cd - time to save the pennies - though I did buy 'The Conversation', Cabaret Voltaire's last recording and was pretty disappointed with it. In particular i'd like to note track (?) 10, sugar daddy... The blend of tracked beats and an absolutely lascvicious voice sample mingle rather incredibly.
