The REALLY SAD thing about this whole "IDM" genre is that it's basically based on Aphex and Autechre. The rest of the stuff I hear almost always either is just noises thrown together rhythmically with no melody(ie: Richard Devine) , which is completely boring (except for the interesting sounds) and almost impossible to get into, OR it just sucks; meaning it has a lack of catchy rhythm or melody making it crap. The fact is, Autechre and Aphex sometimes suck, and in a lot of cases their songs just get by the line of being good at all. Sure, they're complex but what about it being a pleasure to listen to? Isn't music supposed to be enjoyable? I don't know about you, but I don't enjoy 12 minutes of repetition with a "few" change ups but very subtle if noticable at all. It's about time someone made some music without listening to Aphex and Autechre while they make it to make sure they're doing it "right". --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

there are groups out there who sound nothing like either that i think are good. try arovane, magnetaphone, boards of canada, higher intelligence agency, some orbital, some orb, kid606, etc. The problem is that you don't like repetitious stuff, so you probably won't like any of it. I think that repetition is a good thing cause that is where you have to train yourself how to listen. You learn from repetition. It's really unfortunate that you think that way about music because there is a lot of beatiful things being done that you will probably never understand. on 4/27/01 11:40 PM, Lucas at atari808@hotmail.com wrote:

I've said it before and I'll say it again: If you don't like the music you're listening to, maybe you're listening to the wrong music. Try something else until you find what you do like, and if you don't find anything you like, then make your own. Just don't sit around listening to music you don't like and then complain to everyone about how much it sucks. You may as well eat sushi and then complain to the Japanese about the taste. Hey, it's not their fault you don't like it! Personally, I'm pretty satisfied with what I listen to. -adam

**** Personally i'd just like to see people talk less about albums they don't like and more about albums they do like, i can appreciate a little criticism now and then, but reading email after email of X-album sucks or doesn't live up to expectations etc. is pointless, we obviously care enough about this music to make our own minds up... Not to sound overly harsh, but the REALLY SAD thing is this list has been overrun by newbies with Hotmail accounts making dozens of posts each day full of sweeping generalizations. There's two thousand people on this list, and hundreds of artists are discussed. Why not sit back and lurk a while? You'll eventually pick up on lots of unique artists that don't sound like Ae and AFX. One good way to start is to peruse people's playlists.
